Following up on the announcement that The Newsroom would be back for its second season this July, comes a new teaser, which turns the power back on for the series, giving us a look at the inside of the fictional ACN news offices. Where is everybody? We'll see those rooms filled with people in a matter of months when Aaron Sorkin's drama returns for Season 2.
The Newsroom stars Jeff Daniels as cable news anchor Will McAvoy, star of News Night with Will McAvoy. Though the teaser doesn't include a glimpse of McAvoy in the flesh, we do get a look at Daniels' character looking confident as he stares straight ahead from the picture on the wall. The posed photo is sort of like the empty offices in that it offers an interesting and almost amusing contrast to the tone of the show, both the HBO series we watch and the news show featured in this thought-provoking drama. McAvoy may look composed and confident, but as Season 1 proved, he has a tendency to lose his cool and go off-script from time to time, and that's usually when things get most interesting. This teaser feels like the calm before another great storm.
One of the things I loved about The Newsroom in its first season was its efforts to find interesting ways to approach the cable news industry and the commentary it offered on the way news is researched and presented to the masses. The sight of the empty chair in the teaser makes me even more eager to see what happens when Will McAvoy returns to it for Season 2, which is set to premiere on HBO on July 14. In the meantime, the DVD for Season 1 is due out June 11.
