Subscribe To Jennifer Lopez Is Starring In NBC's Next Live Musical, Get The Details Updates
Jennifer Lopez has been back on television in recent years, doing both producing and acting work. Most recently, she's been working with NBC on Shades of Blue, a drama that allows her to pull double duty as an executive producer and as a lead character. NBC is keeping her in the family for its latest project. Lopez is set to do something similar for the Peacock Network, serving as an executive producer and a lead actress for the network's upcoming live musical: Bye Bye Birdie. I guess NBC listens to our requests, after all.
We've been wondering for a while what NBC's next live musical would be. The network has Hairspray set to air live this December, but it's typical for the channel to announce next year's musical quite a long way ahead of time. This week, NBC revealed that family favorite Bye Bye Birdie is going to be the 2017 live musical. Although casting is not heavily underway yet, the network did sign on Jennifer Lopez to play Rosie, aka the woman with the plan to get rock and roll sensation Conrad Birdie to kiss a high school girl on the Ed Sullivan Show and nab herself a husband in the process.
Jennifer Lopez's casting is pretty significant. NBC has managed to land some big names for these productions in the past, most notably Christopher Walken in Peter Pan Live! and Carrie Underwood in The Sound of Music Live!, but landing Jennifer Lopez is still a big deal. In an announcement, NBC noted that it was Lopez's idea to take on the iconic role of Rosie, as Bye Bye Birdie is among her favorite productions.
As noted prior, Jennifer Lopez is also listed as an executive producer on the live production. She will produce alongside Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. In addition, Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein is returning to NBC to write the teleplay for Bye Bye Birdie Live! Fierstein is also currently involved with Hairspray Live! The live production will be based on the 1960 Tony Award-winning musical starring Dick Van Dyke and Chita Rivera.
Currently, NBC hasn't announced an official release for Bye Bye Birdie nor does the show have a full cast, yet. We'll keep you updated as the 2017 production comes together. In the meantime, Hairspray Live! will air on Wednesday, December 7 at 8 p.m. ET, only on NBC. Maddie Baillio, Jennifer Hudson, Harvey Fierstein, Derek Hough, Martin Short, Kristin Chenoweth, Ariana Grande, Rosie O'Donnell and more are expected to star.
