More Sense8 Is Happening At Netflix, Because The Fans

sense8

Netflix was once known as a place where quirky shows could flourish without too much fear of cancellation, but that is no longer the case after CEO Reed Hastings announced that more cancellations of original series need to happen. Shortly thereafter, news broke that the gorgeous and compelling Sense8 had gotten the axe after two seasons and would not return for a third, to the dismay of fans everywhere. Now, those fans are in luck. More Sense8 will happen at Netflix, as was revealed on social media:

Improbably, unforeseeably, your love has brought Sense8 back to life. (I could kiss every single one of you!) It is my great pleasure as well as Netflix's (believe me, they love the show as much as we do but the numbers have always been challenging) to announce that there will be another two hour special released next year. After that... if this experience has taught me anything, you never know.

The fans did it! Fans who were outraged at the cancellation took to social media and kicked off an impassioned campaign to bring back Sense8. Netflix wasn't unaware of the backlash, and the Sense8 team even took to Tumblr to try and calm protesters down. In that post, they revealed that they worked long and hard to come up with a way to return to Netflix one more, but they came up empty. It's impossible to say at this point just what was the tipping point that pushed Netflix to give the order for another two-hour special. Still, we can rejoice. More Sense8 is on the way!

This actually marks the second time that Netflix has ordered a special Sense8 presentation outside of a regular season. After Season 1 and before Season 2, we got a holiday special fittingly titled "Happy F*cking New Year." Unlike that special, however, this new presentation will likely be used to tie up loose ends and finish the stories of the characters. While co-creator Lana Wachowski seems optimistic in the Facebook post that the special may not be the end, it's a pretty safe bet that Netflix won't end it on a cliffhanger. I get the impression that this special is designed to give fans closure, and I'll take it. Check out the full message for yourself!

Hopefully Netflix gives Sense8 the grand finale it deserves. Sense8 is known as one of the most expensive TV shows ever to be produced, with episodes reportedly costing around $9 million per episode due to all the on-location filming all around the world. The show was a visual masterpiece, and such artistry didn't come cheap. We can only cross our fingers and hope that the two-hour special is worthy of everything that came before.

The announcement of the special doesn't give a date for when we can expect it to debut, so we'll have to wait and see. Netflix has plenty of other streaming options, and you can check them out for yourself on our Netflix premiere schedule.
