the 100 anaconda spinoff callie cadogan the cw

Spoilers ahead for the backdoor pilot to The 100's prequel spinoff, called "Anaconda."

The 100 took a break from the struggles at Sanctum and Clarke searching for answers to send viewers on a blast to the past to what could be the show's spinoff. Called "Anaconda," the bulk of the episode was set on Earth, shortly before and then a few years after A.L.I.E. 1.0's nuclear apocalypse, and the end suggested that the prequel spinoff would follow Callie Cadogan and her friends rebuilding society on Earth. That said, The 100 showrunner Jason Rothenberg has already revealed plans to take the spinoff back to space.

If the Anaconda spinoff gets a series order and continues to expand the universe of The 100 on The CW, Jason Rothenberg shared with TVLine had he has planned:

I have a plan to get back to space. One of the characters always dreamed of going to space and will need to in order to intentionally make Nightblood. As we know, Becca comes down to the ground on Unity Day, so there’s a lot happening in space. Clarke’s great, great, great grandparents are up there on the Ark. Same with Bellamy, Raven and all the characters. I have a plan to get us up there and meet the ancestors. If we’re lucky enough to tell that story, we’ll meet Great Great Grandpappy Blake.

"Anaconda" ended with Callie in possession of enough nightblood serum to grant the radiation immunity to up to 2000 other survivors. Although it may be difficult for Callie and her friends to find survivors when Earth is still soaked in too much radiation for any normal human to exist outside of a bunker or protective suit, she has a plan and the means to save a lot of lives. But what about if and when she runs out of serum, or somebody else on the ground decides they need to make more?

According to Jason Rothenberg (who previously revealed how the backdoor pilot fulfills a promise), that will drive somebody up to space to try and intentionally make the serum, in the event of the spinoff prequel getting a series order. The 100 has shown the nightblood will be passed down as a genetic (albeit recessive) trait through natural reproduction, but it has also shown that the ability to make nightblood can come in very handy. But who is the character who dreams of going to space enough to make the journey, and how would that journey happen?

It would be a fun twist if one of Raven's ancestors has a part to play in an Anaconda character making it to space, considering the role Raven played in getting to the ground from space in The 100 Season 1. Jason Rothenberg did share that his plan to get to space would mean meeting the ancestors of the characters that The 100 fans have been following for seven seasons so far. It would be interesting to see how the major 100 characters' ancestors started out after the apocalypse, and how things must have changed over the generations before the likes of Bellamy, Clarke, and the rest were born.

Of course, all of this depends on whether or not The 100 gets a spinoff or if "Anaconda" goes down as just an episode of Season 7 than didn't lead anywhere else. The CW has had some very successful spinoffs over the years, considering the entire expansive Arrowverse directly or indirectly spun off from Arrow. That said, Supernatural tried on two separate occasions to launch a spinoff via backdoor pilot, and no series order came. Riverdale's spinoff recently was cancelled, and even Arrow's latest spinoff isn't guaranteed to happen.

For now, new episodes of The 100 air on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. For more viewing options now and in the not-too-distant future, be sure to check out our 2020 summer TV premiere schedule, and don't forget to vote in our poll below about whether or not the spinoff should happen!
