Star Trek: Lower Decks CBS All Access

Star Trek has been a well-regarded and revered franchise for decades, though perhaps not so much when it comes to comedy. Despite that, more than a few fans were excited after it was revealed the brand would be getting its first adult animated comedy in Star Trek: Lower Decks, and that it would be penned by Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan. With a key figure of one of television's best sci-fi comedies at the helm, it's only "logical" that this series will thrive, right?

That remains to be seen, though I would say Star Trek: Lower Decks has already shown a lot of promise in its bonkers first trailer. Check it out below to see the new wannabee captains, Borg, jokes about blast shields, and some of the behind-the-scenes work that happens on Star Trek ships that fans rarely get to see.

The U.S.S. Cerritos is said to be one of Starfleet's least important ships, but apparently even the bottom tier can make for some action-packed adventures and high stakes situations. While Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford and Tendi aren't necessarily a part of the core lineup of bridge crew members putting their lives on the line, it does look like they get into a few (mis)adventures inadvertently throughout their journey.

There are a smorgas-Borg of awesome references in this Star Trek: Lower Decks trailer, and I'm sure few fans are upset to see them. It's not every day we get to witness members of Starfleet screwing around with blast shields in the first place, much less doing so without being admonished by a superior afterward.

The animation looks great, and is very Rick And Morty-esque, but it's the voice-acting cast members that completely sell the gags, though, which is a r. The central voice cast includes Tawny Newsome (Ensign Beckett Mariner), Jack Quaid (Ensign Brad Boimler), Noël Wells (Ensign Tendi), and Eugene Cordero (Ensign Rutherford). As for non-Lower Decks crew, we have Dawnn Lewis (Captain Carol Freeman). Jerry O’Connell (Commander Jack Ransom), Fred Tatasciore (Lieutenant Shaxs), and Gillian Vigman (Doctor T’Ana).

They'll all work to keep the Cerritos running, and sometimes, even collaborate. Good to see Star Trek: Lower Decks will focus on its Bridge Crew somewhat, or at least that the characters are kind enough not to completely ice out the grunt workers of the ship.

Looks like the Ensigns will have their work cut out for them in Season 1, but will their heroics be enough to get them out of the Lower Decks? I'm guessing not, judging from the show's title, but I'm okay with that after seeing just how much fun is on the way in the upcoming ten-episode first season.
