The Expanse has left fans waiting to find out what happens in the aftermath of the Season 4 finale for the better part of a year now, but now Amazon has some new good news when it comes to the sci-fi series. The fifth season is on the way before the end of the year, and the new Season 5 trailer reveals that Armageddon is coming courtesy of Marco Inaros. And that's not all!

The fifth season of The Expanse will debut on Wednesday, December 16 on Amazon, and you can get a sneak peek at what's to come in the thrilling new trailer:

Amazon reveals with the trailer that the future of The Belt has begun. The lifetime of oppression and injustice has led Marco Inaros to wage Armageddon, and that's not the only plot that the returning characters will have to deal with in Season 5. The fifth season will pick up on Season 4 as a whole lot of humans are leaving the solar system for new lives, homes, and fortunes beyond the alien Ring, while a reckoning is on the way due to all the hundreds of years of Belt exploitation.

Meanwhile, the past and present converge for the crew of the Rocinante and the leaders of the Inner Planets and the Belt, leading to new personal challenges major enough to have significant repercussions in the solar system. While Amos goes back to earth to confront his past, Naomi reaches out to her son despite their estrangement to try and remove him from his father's influence.

As if that's not enough, the collapse of Mars leads Alex and Bobbie to chase a cabal that has ties to criminals and terrorists. Holden has to face the consequences of his history with the aliens who built the Protomolecule and what killed them. Drummer wants to escape her past with a new crew, and Avasarala fights to stop an unprecedented terrorist attack.

Basically, fans won't want to miss even a single episode of The Expanse Season 5! Despite actor Cas Anvar generating some bad press for the show over the hiatus, the trailer indicates that Wes Chatham might have been on the money when he described Season 5 as the "best thing" they've ever done.

The fifth season will run for ten episodes, but they won't release all at once like they did with Season 4 in 2019. Like The Boys, the first three episodes will debut on the first day, with the remaining seven releasing weekly on Wednesdays thereafter. Fans can count on Episodes 1-3 premiering on December 16, with the Season 5 finale releasing on February 3, 2021.

You can find the first four seasons of The Expanse (including the first three that aired on Syfy before the cancellation and the series' subsequent rescue by Amazon) streaming on Amazon now.
