Disney+ Clarifies Whether The Book Of Boba Fett Is The Mandalorian Season 3 Or Not

Spoilers below for those who haven't yet finished watching The Mandalorian's Season 2 finale all the way through!

While The Mandalorian obviously delivered a couple of huge gut-punches with its second season finale – in particular, a gut-punch shaped like Mark Hamill's Luke SkywalkerJon Favreau & Co. saved one of the best reveals for after the episode technically ended. Following the surprisingly quiet end credits, which lacked the usual concept art, The Mandalorian gave fans a rollicking teaser sequence announcing The Book of Boba Fett would be arriving in December 2021, though it failed to actually say if The Book of Boba was meant to be Season 3, or if it was its own thing.

Thankfully, Disney+ finally cleared things up for Star Wars fans, even if it took until Monday morning for it to happen. According to the rising star streaming service, The Book of Boba Fett will indeed be the next standalone spinoff tethered to The Mandalorian's universe. Here's how the company explained it in a tweet, while also confirming a few key creatives behind the scenes.

This news should be quite comforting to fans who were afraid that Jon Favreau would be curtailing the storyline of Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin and replacing it with a renewed focus on Temuera Morrison's Boba Fett, with the Mandalorian title being transferrable between characters. I suppose that can technically still happen at some point, but we probably don't need to worry about The Book of Boba Fett being the catalyst behind Mando's exit.

It's not a big surprise to learn that both Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are executive producers for The Book of Boba Fett, considering they're a critical part of the storytelling cycle within this TV universe. It was, however, somewhat surprising to see that filmmaker Robert Rodriguez will be maintaining a more permanent spot in Star Wars' future. Rodriguez directed the episode "The Tragedy," and thus is responsible for giving Boba Fett the kinds of action scenes that truly made him as badass as he was always thought to be. It's not clear from this message if Rodriguez will be responsible for helming some or all of the Book of Boba Fett episodes, but it's not unlikely if the scheduling works out.

What this tweet does NOT do, however, is confirm that The Mandalorian Season 3 is a thing that will exist. It's all but assured, considering how extremely popular the first live-action Star Wars series has been for the streaming service. But with all the other franchise TV shows in development, it's possible Mando's future will take a backseat until everything else can come together.

The Mandalorian's first two seasons are available to stream in full on Disney+ right now, with The Book of Boba Fett set to arrive in December 2021.
