After eight months of watching Marvel Cinematic Universe shows on Disney+, fans have started to grasp how the streaming series operate differently than their blockbuster siblings. Not only is the storytelling different and less dependent on action/spectacle, but we also haven’t seen the same kind of consistency where end credits sequences are concerned. Audiences have come to expect the franchise to include extra scenes at the conclusions of narratives – either teasing what is to come, playing out a gag, or trying up certain loose ends – but WandaVision, The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, and Loki all only feature codas on certain episodes.

Now What If is set to arrive as the latest series from the MCU, and fans are curious if the situation will stay the same. It turns out that the basic answer is “yes,” as it will remain the case that not every episode will feature its own end credits scene – but the situation is actually a bit more intriguing than just that, based on what I recently learned interviewing producer Brad Winderbaum.

I spoke with Winderbaum during What If’s virtual press day this past weekend, and when I asked about seeing bonus scenes on the show, he cryptically replied,

I mean, there is ‘a’ post-credits scene.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is quite a tease that has our minds spinning thinking about possibilities.

Now, it could be that this bit of info doesn’t mean anything. As noted, end credits scenes in Marvel movies have been used in a wide variety of fashions going back to 2008 – and that includes moments delivered as punchlines and specially designed gags (the Captain America appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming immediately springs to mind). What we end up seeing as and end credits scene in What If may wind up being nothing more than a fun button on whatever adventure to which it is attached.

But (and please pardon the phrasing) what if it’s more? It’s true that we haven’t seen many end credits scenes in the Marvel Disney+ shows, but it’s hard not to notice that each one that we have seen has featured a significant reveal – including the existence of White Vision in WandaVision, and the collection of Lokis living near The Void in Loki. It doesn’t feel totally unreasonable to wonder if the one coda featured in What If has a special significance that could wind up having larger implications.

We can’t say for certain right now which episode the end credits scene will be attached to, but fans will be able to start experiencing What If starting next Wednesday, August 11 at midnight PST/3am EST on Disney+. While we wait, answer our poll below regarding your expectations for the new Marvel series.

Do you think that the one What If end credits scene will have big implications for the future of the MCU?
