ABC Family To Order Two Comedy Pilots, Another Drama

It looks like three more pilots will be ordered shortly over at ABC Family. They’re finalizing negotiations to order a drama pilot and two half-hour comedy pilots as well. The drama is based on a Mexican format, Terminales, while the comedies are Phys Ed and Continuing Fred, which comes from the guy who brought us Mike & Molly.

Terminales has been in development for just over a year, since August of 2011, says Deadline and seems to have finally made it to the final stages. The plot line is about the life of a woman after she is diagnosed with a terminal illness. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s on Showtime and it’s called The Big C. There seems to have been a crop of these “impact of a terminal illness projects popping up lately. Between the aforementioned Big C and of course the mother of all terminal illness life-derailing series, Breaking Bad, I’m not sure there’s room for much more.

Also ready to go to pilot are Phys Ed, from American Pie 2 writer David H. Steinberg. The half-hour multi-camera comedy is about a former high school sports star who comes back to teach Phys Ed, finding the school where he was a star is pretty much the same (because high school doesn’t ever change) even though he has changed.

The last pilot ABC Family has on tap is also set in a school. Continuing Fred is about a young teacher in an elementary school whose slacker ways are changed when she actually finds the position meaningful. Between the two, my money is on this one; it’s more ABC Family’s style and has Bill Daly behind it.
