Those familiar with Sex and the City should be just as familiar with Samantha Jones, one of Carrie Bradshaw's closest friends and confidants, who was originally portrayed by Kim Cattrall in both the HBO TV series and the movies that followed. But how did these two characters meet? The Carrie Diaries aims to explore that scenario in its upcoming second season. Not only has the role been cast, but Warner Bros. has already put actor Lindsey Gort into some full-on stylin' 80s hair, make-up, costume and accessories for a promotional photo that gives us our first look at young Samantha Jones for the CW series.
Let's just take a moment to soak in all of the 80s going on here. White tiger crop top. Studded belt. Big dangly earrings. Some kind of chunky bangle situation going on with her right wrist. Rings on her left hand. Teased out blonde hair with dark roots. Bright lipstick. She looks like she'd be a perfect fit for any classic 80s music video, doesn't she? We might not be far off the mark there. WB describes the character as a ballsy, beautiful and sexy young woman from the panhandle of Florida who has made her way - and already a name for herself - in the rock 'n' roll scene of 1980s NYC. If the show follows the path of Sex and the City, Samantha Jones should have at least a few years on AnnaSophia Robb's teen character Carrie Bradshaw. Her actual age isn't revealed, but WB says Carrie and Samantha meet "through a surprising connection" this season. Will they hit it off right away? Or is this a relationship that's meant to develop over time? Fans will find out.
From what executive producer Amy B. Harris has to say, it sounds like Gort's perfect for the part:
“In another nerve-wracking search to create the amazing characters we all came to know and love on Sex and the City, we went out in search this year for a young Samantha Jones. Lindsey Gort walked into the room and owned the part. Funny and sexy with a whiff of vulnerability and an amazing dash of outrageousness, Lindsey is our exciting choice to play the young Samantha Jones.”
Whether or not fans thinks she nails the part remains to be seen, but they should expect to see a lot of her as she's billed as a series regular for the show, which is set to return for its second season this fall. Unfortunately, fans will be waiting until late October for The Carrie Diaries to return. The drama is among the last of there returning shows to debut this season, with a premiere date set for Friday, October 25. View the full CW Fall 2013 premiere schedule here.
