Directed by Philip Kaufman - the Academy Award nominee behind the similarly epic The Right Stuff as well as the much celebrated The Unbearable Lightness of Being - HBO Films' Hemingway & Gellhorn stars Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman in the titular roles or Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn. The made-for-television movie will explore the tumultuous romance between the two writers, a nine-year marriage that spanned the Spanish Civil War through World War II.

Until now, HBO had only released a few short teasers, highly focused on the acclaimed leading actors, but that's hardly the way to showcase a self proclaimed 'epic motion picture event.' This new trailer, however, is a more fitting length and finally showcases the events unfolding behind the famous faces and their narrative-driving romance. Take a look at the first full trailer for HBO's Hemingway & Gellhorn.

Once again the preview focuses on the leads but it's also careful to expand beyond the romance and finally showcase the large scale. Clive Owen has the unenviable task of following Corey Stoll's turn as Hemingway in Midnight in Paris. However, Nicole Kidman definitely looks the part and seems like a great choice for Gellhorn and I don't think I've actually been excited to see her in a project in some time. Plus, there's also a large ensemble of award winning actors like Robert Duvall, David Strathairn and Molly Parker who all are also glimpsed in the two minute spot.

Finally, the feature also offers a look at some of the interesting stylistic and storytelling choices that Kaufman has made in order to bring the historical tale to life and to television. The epic movie will incorporate both documentary footage as well as (more interestingly and more often) recreated 'historical footage' using the actors. I really enjoyed the sepia toned, or blue-grey filtered footage, both scratched and grainy, that showed the historical scenarios unfold with Owen and Kidman superimposed in the action. In fact, the truly epic five-minute preview that leaked a few months back has resurfaced and it spends even more time highlighting the stylistic shifts that accompany the sprawling narrative. Here's that extended, extended look.

Hemingway & Gellhorn premieres Monday, May 28 on HBO. It stars Nicole Kidman, Clive Owen, Robert Duvall, David Strathairn, Peter Coyote and Molly Parker. It was directed by Philip Kaufman.
