Reno 911's Kerri Kenney Joins Counter Culture Pilot At ABC

Another Reno 911 alum has picked up a lead role in a pilot this season at ABC. Kerri Kenney follows in the footsteps of her co-star in the Comedy Central cop show spoof, Wendi McLendon-Covey with a co-starring role in the ABC comedy pilot Counter Culture. The multi-camera comedy is assembling a strong female cast so far.

According to Deadline Kerri Kenney has come on board the comedy project. Her Reno 911 co-star Wendi McLendon-Covey recently joined ABC’s Only Fools and Horses. Kenney will play one of three sisters in the pilot. Already cast as their aunt is Doris Roberts of Everybody Loves Raymond. Margo Martindale of Justified will play another of the sisters; Joyce, the eldest, is a cancer survivor and the glue that holds the family together.

The comedy surrounds three sisters who run a West Texas diner together. Kenney will play Billie, the younger sister who is a former party girl now doing the AA steps and trying to stay sober while avoiding the realization that she’s aging fast. The project will apparently rely on the dynamic between the three women as the source of comedy; the third sister has yet to be cast. No doubt Doris Roberts will provide ample laughs in the form of her dry wit as the three sisters’ aunt. The pilot is being written and produced by MadTV alum Stephnie Weir, keeping the project solidly female – it sounds like the type of comedy that might successfully draw the female audience if the characters are real and likeable enough.
