Spoilers ahead for the Season 3 finale of House of the Dragon titled "The Treasons at Tumbleton"
The Game of Thrones universe continues to entertain audiences in the years since its controversial finale. Two spinoffs have arrived, chief among them being House of the Dragon (which is streaming with a HBO Max subscription). The third season just ended with an epic and tragic final episode, featuring a number of major character deaths. Chief among them was Helaena's suicide, and Rhaenyra actor Emma D'Arcy shared their take on this tragedy.
House of the Dragon Season 3 took us deeper into the Dance of Dragons, and was full of huge character deaths like Jace as well as the unceremonious death of Criston Cole. In the final moments of the finale we see that Helaena has jumped out of her window to end her life, killing both herself and her unborn child in the process. At a press conference for the HOTD (via ScreenRant) D'Arcy spoke about what Helaena's death means, and how it'll impact Rhaenyra's story moving forward. In their words:
Helaena is sort of the moral heart of the show, I think. Maybe the only character who has proximity to power, but remains kind of uncontaminated. I think her death sort of condemns Rhaenyra to the path she’s chosen. I think there’s no way back after that. There’s certainly no route back to a kind of more moderate form of leadership. And, I mean, I don’t know where we go from here, but I imagine it’ll likely be impassable in her relationship with Alicent, which I think also means Helaena’s death condemns Rhaenyra to be alone in her pursuit of power.
Yikes. House of the Dragon Season 4 is expected to be the final chapter in the Game of Thrones spinoff, and things are looking pretty grim after Season 3's finale. Emma D'Arcy's character finally let her ruthless side come out, with Rhaenyra killing the High Septon, force feeding Helaena, and letting Daemon use Caraxes in the battle at Tumbleton. And Heleana's death will likely send shockwaves through Westeros, and will impact how The Realm (as well as Team Green) views Rhaenyra.
In the same press conference, Emma D'Arcy spoke more about Rhaenyra turning to her darker side, especially when comes to any potential threats to her rule on the Iron Throne. The actor tied together the High Septon and Helaena, offering:
Rhaenyra, you know, her rejection of the Seven and murder of the High Septon and this attempt to reject other legitimizing institutions. In a funny way, Helaena’s power of sight is another sort of institution of legitimacy. I guess I just love the simplicity of looking at a document that could be hugely illuminating, but choosing to chuck it on the floor.
The final shot of the Season 3 finale shows Rhaenyra drops Helaena's embroidery on the ground, despite knowing that her late half sister was a dreamer. Instead of using the embroidery as a guide to the ongoing dance, she tosses is aside and closes the window that Helaena leapt from to kill herself.
This final character death will presumably suint any hope of Rhaenyra and Alicent having a relationship, and should only make Aegon more violent in his revenge if/when he learns she was pregnant.
House of the Dragon is streaming in its entirety on HBO Max as part of the 2026 TV schedule. Now comes the hard part for fans: waiting until the fourth and final season is filmed and released.
