I Didn’t Watch Survivor Last Night Because President Trump, Two Streaming Services And My Wife’s Book Club Conspired Against Me
I'm big mad.

It’s 2026. You would think we’d be at the point where DVR services could easily adjust to scheduling changes, but that is apparently not the case. If a sporting event runs over its timeslot, chances are the recording of the show afterwards is going to be all screwed up. If the local news cuts in for a weather alert, the full, proper version of the show is likely never going to be restored, and as I regrettably found out last night, if President Trump schedules a speech during a primetime window, watching Survivor later that night on DVR is not going to be an option.
Saying I’m a big Survivor fan doesn’t quite sell my fandom enough. I’m a full-on crazy person in the deep end of the ocean spearfishing in Fiji. I listen to multiple podcasts a week. I care about things like how many confessionals contestants have in each episode and what sort of tone they seem to be getting from the edit. I plan my week around Survivor, and yet, here I am, the morning after the two hour Blood Moon extravaganza with no idea what happened because President Trump, YouTube TV, Paramount+ and my wife’s book club all accidentally conspired to keep me from watching it.
It all started with a book club. My wife’s monthly meeting with her sister and friends to talk about romantasy was regrettably scheduled for last night. We typically watch Survivor together; so, I agreed to hold off on the episode until she got home. I was actually fine with that plan because CBS had previously announced it was going to air part of the Survivor 50 episode, then cut to President Trump’s speech and then air the second part of the episode. That didn’t sound like a particularly enjoyable way to consume my favorite show; so, watching it a few hours late with my wife felt like the better option.
Article continues belowSince I’m not a rookie and understand the timing of political speeches can sometimes change and cause a chain reaction of scheduling chaos, I went into YouTube TV in the late afternoon and made sure not only Survivor was set to record but also President Trump’s speech, America’s Culinary Cup, which airs afterwards, and even the local news, which airs after America’s Culinary Cup. I then double-checked by going into the live channel guide and manually scrolling over to the scheduled time, where I verified the four hour or so window was all set to record. I was ready, or at least I thought I was.
Unfortunately, when we went to watch the episode after she got home, it wasn’t anywhere to be found. Apparently, YouTube TV freaked out about Survivor being bisected and didn’t register it as a proper new episode, which means it wasn’t recorded. In a panic, I headed over to Paramount+, which I subscribe to, and the new Survivor episode wasn’t uploaded. A quick bit of internet sleuthing told me new episodes of shows airing on traditional CBS aren’t actually uploaded to the service until the next day. It also wasn’t on OnDemand, leaving me with zero options.
I stayed up until midnight Eastern to see if the episode would get added right as the day changed, but sadly, that did not happen. I had no choice but to angrily go to sleep. Thankfully, I woke up this morning to see YouTube TV has fixed the issue and uploaded the episode in full. It’s also now on Paramount+, which means I have multiple options to watch. Unfortunately, I start work at 7AM, which means instead of watching Survivor, I’m writing an article and shouting into the void about how I didn’t watch Survivor.
It feels really stupid to complain about this, but it also feels really stupid that I couldn’t watch my favorite show last night when I recorded it and pay for a subscription to the service it streams on. Everyone knew President Trump’s speech was going to interrupt primetime last night. It seems really weird that YouTube TV didn’t account for this and make sure the proper versions of the interrupted episodes weren’t available to watch immediately if people recorded them. It also seems really weird that Paramount+, knowing millions of people would have an abnormal Survivor viewing experience, didn’t have the episode ready to go and uploaded ASAP on Paramount+.

I appreciate that YouTube TV had the proper version of Survivor in my DVR when I woke up this morning. I also appreciate that Paramount+ uploaded the episode at some point in the middle of the night. Those are both steps forward, but they’re not far enough. In the future, there are going to be more presidential speeches, sporting event overruns and emergency weather events. Given the state of network television, it seems like everyone involved should be invested in proactively working together to make sure there are readily available options for people to watch the full versions of their favorite shows, whether they were interrupted by the President Of The United States or their wife's book club.
