Nicholas Winding Refnís Only God Forgives was one of the most anticipated movies screening at the Cannes Film Festival this year, as many who were moved by the directorís collaboration with leading man Ryan Gosling on Drive were excited to see what theyíd do next. Then it screened Ö and the reactions werenít pretty. Weíll get to those in a second, but first, Crave Online serves up a lengthy exclusive clip thatís very NSFW thanks to Kristin Scott Thomasí brutal choices for dinner conversation. See what happens above.

The above clip kind of sums up everything critics in Cannes have been saying about Refnís latest. Itís slow moving; itís dominated by Scott Thomas, who chews the scenery in the vile role of a vengeful mother; and it features a brooding Gosling doing very little Ö and very little different from what he did in Drive. Sure enough, the actor makes it through this entire clip without saying a word. If that fits the mood of the movie, it might work, but reactions out of France following an early screening have not been favorable.

How bad can it be? Well, Jeff Wells from Hollywood-Elsewhere writes:
Movies really donít get much worse than Nicholas Winding RefnĎs Only God Forgives. Itís a shit macho fantasy ó hyperviolent, ethically repulsive, sad, nonsensical, deathly dull, snail-paced, idiotic, possibly woman-hating, visually suffocating, pretentious. Ö I felt violated, shat upon, sedated, narcotized, appalled and bored stiff.

It canít be that bad. Can it? Refn has skill as a director, and Drive was fantastic. There has to be something worth celebrating in Only God Forgives. Weíll see. The movie opens in the U.S. on July 19th, but that red-band clip above Ö it doesnít inspire me to rush right out to the theater. Does it work for you?
