Wait, Was That A Sabrina The Teenage Witch Cameo In Riverdale's Finale Trailer?

The world of Archie Comics features more characters than just the ones who live in Riverdale, of course, and of those, Sabrina the Teenage Witch is perhaps the most requested to appear in the CW mystery drama named after the central setting. Though the Riverdale producers have been open to the idea, they've never made any promises. With a big Archie character teased to join the cast in the Riverdale finale, it's easy to think that could refer to Sabrina, and a trailer for next week's episode may have cleverly teased her upcoming appearance. This moment comes from the trailer to Riverdale's finale, and a tip of the hat goes to net scribe Michele Curran for bringing attention to it. The photo shows FP Jones, the father of Jughead, sitting in a jail cell reading a comic. Though it seems pretty inconspicuous upon first glance, when a show is based off a comic, never write off anything too quickly. The cover of the comic wasn't immediately recognizable before nabbing the shot from the trailer, but once things cleared up, it got a little easier to seek out.

The comic that FP is reading is actually Chilling Adventures in Sorcery #1, a horror anthology comic narrated by none other than Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Here's a better look at the cover for comparison.

Yep, looks like this fits the bill alright! And the appearance of this specific comic could mean a few things. The easiest and simplest one is that it's just a fun easter egg referencing an Archie character that won't show up ever on this show. That's all well and good, sort of, but this could also be teasing something more.

The producers of Riverdale have been hyping up the final episode of Season 1 with that bit Archie Comics debut, which could be referring to a number of characters. For instance, the No. 1 theory is that the character will be Hiram Lodge, the father of Veronica, who has been serving out his own prison sentence this season and aims to factor more heavily into Season 2. Another popular theory more connected to this story is that the highly demanded Sabrina will be the one to finally return to live-action television. In that case, this comic could be foreshadowing her upcoming appearance in the episode. It's that, or the comic serves as her actual "appearance," which would be disappointing.

Fans of Riverdale will find out for sure when Riverdale airs its season finale on Thursday, May 11, 2017, at 9 p.m. EST on the CW. Head to our summer TV schedule to see when all your other favorite shows are hitting the airwaves.
