The Fate Of The World Is Yet Again In The Hands Of A Wrestler In The Marine 2

I’ve never quite wrapped my brain around the strange little sub-genre of film that caters to wrestling fans. Sure, some wrestlers have either the acting chops or sheer presence that allows them to rise above the ring and build an actual acting career in Hollywood. Despite his questionable choice of films, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has a serious knack for comedy when the right role crosses his path. Is there any question that Andre the Giant is the only person on the planet who could have played Fezzik in The Princess Bride? Indeed, was there anyone more qualified to chew bubble gum and kick ass in They Live than Roddy Piper? I think not.

But then there’s this whole niche of films that seem to serve solely as audition tapes for whichever wrestler is the flavor of the moment. Case in point: 2006’s The Marine, which was written and directed by no one you’ve ever heard of, but managed to gross $18M or so because it had wrestler John Cena in it. Not exactly busting any blocks, but somebody obviously thought it was good enough to merit a sequel. John Cena has since gone on to make another action film I will never see, but have no fear, WW-what-have-you fans, because a wrestling replacement has arrived in the form of somebody named “Ted DiBiase.”

You may have gathered by now that I am not exactly the target audience for this movie.
