If you’re of a certain age there’s a strong chance that mention of the words “La Cabina” will send a shiver down your spine. This 1972 short, made for Spanish television, tells the tale of a Barcelona man who goes to use a shiny new phonebox, then gets stuck inside. It won an International Emmy, and went on to traumatise a generation of UK viewers who unwittingly stumbled upon late-night broadcasts in the ‘80s.
Radiance Films’ new release Two Boxes: Televised Horror In Franco’s Spain pairs it with another hidden gem: El Televisor, a 1974 TV movie about a family man who’s always dreamed of owning a colour television – and, once he buys a set, becomes dangerously obsessed with it. The highlight of the bonus features is a very entertaining commentary track on “La Cabina” by two famous fans: Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, creators of Inside No 9.
