Horton Goes Hollywood

Sometimes it’s funny how these news stories time out. Just yesterday I was driving around town listening to “Seussical” in my car, thinking how well it would translate to an animated musical. The music for “Seussical” is actually pretty good, but I think it was a Broadway failure because its target audience really should be kids - kids are less likely to see a Broadway show, but would quickly get involved in a cartoon.

Fast forward to today, as Fox Animation announces it has sealed the deal to make a CGI-cartoon version of “Horton Hears a Who”, with an add on option to make the sequel, “Horton Hatches an Egg”. Well, it’s not “Seussical,” but that’s the primary story behind the musical.

Blue Sky, the animation force behind Ice Age and this weekend’s potential hit Robots is set to produce the animation for Horton, with the script being written by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, the scribes of The Santa Clause 2.

I have hope for an animated Seuss tale, despite recent movies based on Dr. Seuss’s work being pretty horrible. Animation can pull of things best left to cartoons and out of the hands of Mike Myers (The Cat in the Hat) and Jim Carrey (The Grinch).
