Oren Moverman Takes Over Universal's Kurt Cobain Biopic

Oren Moverman only just made his debut as a director last fall, but when your debut is something as elegant and tight as The Messenger, the offers inevitably start pouring in. Fresh off a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination (shared with co-writer Alessandro Camon), Moverman has finally picked his next project, and will be taking over Universal's planned Kurt Cobain biopic.

The movie has been in development at the studio for years, according to THR, with plans to base the film on Charles R. Cross's 2001 Cobain biography Heavier than Heaven. Universal also purchased the life rights for both Cobain and his widow, Courtney Love.

Moverman will be working off whatever screenwriter David Benioff put together while he was on the project, though I wouldn't be surprised to see him take it in a completely different direction. THR doesn't mention when the project will get going, though given that Moverman doesn't have anything else actively lined up, he might even be casting by the end of the year. It's been 16 years since Cobain committed suicide; now sounds about right for reminding a whole new generation of his legacy.
