Paramount Banking On A Female Action Duo

When The New York Times wrote about Diablo Cody and her "fempire" of screenwriter buddies last March, Liz Meriwether was the least known of the bunch, described as a successful playwright whose TV pilot Sluts hooked her up with famous friends even though it wasn't picked up.

But Meriwether must be something special indeed, since her pitch Honey Pot has been picked up by Paramount, even though it sounds just as risky as it does awesome. Meriwether told Variety it's what happens "when a bunch of hot, funny women get their Bourne on." All we know about the plot is that it's about two female leads who are, most likely, spies.

I know it sounds like typical feminist whining to point out how few movies feature female leads, but I'm seriously flabbergasted by the notion of this movie. Women are so rarely given the chance to be action stars without a male counterpart, and making an action comedy is a lot more difficult than just sending someone around the world to blow shit up. This Meriwether chick must be gooood. I almost don't want to get my hopes up to look forward to it, but if she pulls this off, the female action star may damn well be reborn.
