Marc Webb’s reboot of the on-screen Spidey franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man reaches DVD and Blu-ray today. (Read our review of the new release right here.) And while the film did extremely well at the global box office, earning $752 million to date, detractors griped about having to endure the familiar origin story again (despite Webb’s decisions to tweak it from the comics and establish a vivid new take on the timeless character).
One element that couldn’t be downplayed in Webb’s movie, however, was the passionate chemistry established between Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone as Peter Parker and his teenage love interest, Gwen Stacy. As part of one of the many extras included on the Spider-Man disc on shelves, fans can see a screen test between Garfield and Stone, which led to their eventual casting. We have it below, courtesy of ET:
In a similar interview, Webb teases Easter Eggs in key ASM scenes that might hint where the sequel will go. Specifically, look for a moment when Gwen is giving a tour of the Oscorp tower, and keep your eyes peeled to the backgrounds in the final shot, when Spidey launches himself out of a crane and swings across Manhattan’s majestic skyline.
Those who follow Spider-Man’s story understand the importance of Gwen to Peter’s mythology, too. Yes, they become boyfriend and girlfriend … but in the closing scenes of Webb’s first film, there are hints to the dark undertones that are on the horizon (providing the producers follow the tragic Gwen Stacy storyline from the comics). However, as we begin to learn more about the villains Webb might want in his planned sequel, the Green Goblin might end up on the back burner – or, at least, more on the back-burner then fans might have hoped.
We’re also learning that Mary Jane Watson might become part of the bigger picture in Webb’s Spidey universe, meaning Garfield will have to forge a connection with another potential love interest. Will they have the same chemistry as Garfield and Stone? We’ll find out in 2014.
