Earlier this week, we exclusively had the chance to give all of you lovely readers a sneak peek at Luc Besson's Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets - specifically by showcasing a first look at one of the many amazingly cool alien species that will populate the film. As cool as that was, today is the day we've really been looking forward to, however, as we now get to share with you the first trailer for the movie. And looking like a hybrid of The Fifth Element and Guardians of the Galaxy, it will absolutely blow your mind.
I hope that you've now watched this trailer multiple times just to soak in all of the awesome-ness. There is nothing not to absolutely fall in love with here, from the perfect use of "Because" by The Beatles (the first time a Beatles master recording has been licensed for a trailer), to breathtaking visuals. Admittedly it doesn't provide us much in terms of narrative or plot, but that's what the second trailer is for. This teaser is just meant to give us a taste of what Valerian And the City Of A Thousand Planets is bringing to the table, and it has us instantly at attention and counting down the days to release.
Based on the French Valerian And Laureline comics by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières, the Luc Besson film brings us into a fresh sci-fi world where we follow the adventures of Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne), who operate as spatio-temporal agents protecting the universe from all kinds of threats. Under orders from their commander (Clive Owen), they are sent to Alpha, which is an intergalactic city that brings together thousands of different alien species from the farthest reaches of the galaxy. While Alpha is primarily a peaceful place, where a harmony is found in cooperation, there are operations going on behind the scenes that could undermine everything for which it stands.
Luc Besson notably got his break directing assassin films like Nikita and The Professional, but over the years he has contributed a great deal to the science-fiction genre, and Valerian and the City Of A Thousand Planets looks like it could be another fun genre winner for the filmmaker. Of course, his greatest work in this arena to date is 1997's The Fifth Element, but it's worth noting that the amazing look and design of that movie was inspired by Besson's collaboration with Valerian co-creator Jean-Claude Mézières in the production design department.
