Power Rangers Is Already Getting A Follow-Up, But In A Different Way
If you've been paying any attention to the world of TV and movies, you'll notice that nostalgia is everywhere. As such, popular studios are bringing back old and previously completed franchises, such as Gilmore Girls: A Year the Life and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And perhaps the most highly anticipated of these reboots if the new Power Rangers movie, which will modernize the tale of 1990's classic kids show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. With hype around the upcoming blockbuster so high, many have been wondering if it will turn into a bonafide franchise, as the Power Rangers catalogue certainly has enough stories to fill a film series. Now it appears the new set of rangers will continue their story, just not in the way we might have thought.
It has just been announced (via IGN) that the new Power Rangers movie will continue on through a sequel. But rather than a film adaptation, the sequel will be in the form of a follow-up graphic novel. Public BOOM! Studios will produce the novel, titled Power Rangers: Aftershock, which will take place directly after the events of the upcoming movie. So if any questions or cliffhangers are present during the movie's runtime, they will likely be addressed through the graphic novel.
Unfortunately, not much is known about the plot of the upcoming Power Rangers graphic novel. Of course, details about the actual film wave been so scarce that this should come as a surprise to no one. We know that a group of teenagers with attitude will eventually acquire super powers in their town of Angel Grove and battle Elizabeth Banks' Rita Repulsa, but that's about it.
Given the scarcity of Power Rangers information, footage, and imagery, things are still very much up in the air for the upcoming blockbuster. It's unclear as to just how closely the movie will relate to the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, considering the difference in genres. Mighty Morphin was a poorly dubbed children's show, which was made to entertain less sophisticated audiences. But now that a live-action adaptation is coming out, we can assume that things won't be quite as campy and ridiculous. Sure, all the character names are the same, but I highly doubt that we'll be getting goofy putties, bumbling Bulk and Skull, and an Alpha-5 that constantly yells.
Personally, I'm very eager for a new Power Rangers trailer to hit the web. We haven't actually been shown any action sequences, and one can assume that action is the majority of the new movie. 90's kids all over the world are ready to see the Rangers fighting the likes of Goldar and the putties. Additionally, everyone wants to see the Zords in action, both before and after the Megazord is assembled.
Power Rangers will fly into theaters March 24th, 2017.
