A lot of eyes are going to be trained on Gal Gadot in a few weeks when she debuts her first solo film in the DC Extended Universe. Prior to the release of the movie, Gal Gadot has been asked about Wonder Woman a lot, and she recently revealed that a lot of the questions she gets revolve around how she can wear a tight outfit and proclaim to be a feminist. Because she's getting that question a lot, you have to assume she's thought about it quite a bit and she recently explained how her character addresses these two defining traits: fashion and feminism. Here's what she had to say:
We've already heard from director Patty Jenkins that Wonder Woman actually doesn't have to worry about the whole feminist argument throughout the upcoming movie, simply because the idea of sexism is a non-conversation for her. Wonder Woman grew up on an island where women are incredible and don't have to worry about competing with men, so today's politics don't really apply in the DC movie. Gal Gadot seems to be echoing what Jenkins has said in her own interview with the NY Times and adding a little to that by noting that everyone involved with the movie came together and decided this was the right direction to take.
There's often a lot of misconceptions out there about what feminism is supposed to be, but I think Gal Gadot really does hit the nail on the head when she talks about choice and freedom. Feminism is about valuing freedom and protecting the right of ladies everywhere to be the people they want to be and make the choices they want to make. We live in a world with a lot of different personalities and possibilities and the key to feminism is being supportive of all the ladies you engage with in your life.
Luckily, there should be quite a few ladies on Themyscira. You won't have too much longer to wait to find out either. The new Wonder Woman movie will finally hit theaters on June 2 and then if you'd like even more from the DCEU, Justice League will be hitting later this year.
