Incredibles 2 Has Passed The Incredibles At The Box Office

Incredibles 2

Marvel and DC usually have the superhero movie game cornered, but every now and then costumed crimefighters who don't hail from either of those companies leave an impressive mark on the big screen. Over the last few weeks, the Parr family has done as such in Incredibles 2, marking the return of the superhero family 14 years after their debut. The sequel has been doing quite well at the box office, and the latest entry on its list of accomplishments is surpassing The Incredibles' worldwide total by more than $10 million.

When The Incredibles' time in theaters ended more than a decade ago, it had collected a little over $633 million worldwide, making it the fourth highest-grossing movie of 2004. According to Box Office Mojo, Incredibles 2 has soared past its predecessor and then some, as it currently rests at nearly $648 million worldwide. What makes this even more impressive is that unlike The Incredibles, which opened in November of its year and only had The Polar Express as major competition, Incredibles 2 opened smack-dab in the middle of summer blockbuster season, sandwiched between the likes of Ocean's 8 and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Even accounting for inflation, the fact that Incredibles 2 has passed The Incredibles while holding its own against other major movies is... well, incredible. It is worth noting, however, that when it comes to foreign box office receipts, The Incredibles still reigns over Incredibles 2, with $371.5 million vs. $208.2 million.

More than a decade may have passed between both Incredibles movies for us, but for the inhabitants of this Pixar world, Incredibles 2 picked up immediately after The Incredibles, with the Parr family forced to don their costumes and clash with The Underminer. The superhero movie market has become significantly more saturated over the last decade, but as Incredibles 2 demonstrated with its commercial performance and heaps of critical praise, it's managed to impress numerous moviegoers with its story about Elastigirl being recruited to help bring superheroes back into the light, all while Mr. Incredible stays home to look after the kids. As things stand now, Incredibles 2 is the fifth highest grossing movie of 2018, and talk has circulated about if Incredibles 3 is a possibility. We'll be sure to keep you updated on if a threequel is indeed in the cards, but for now, Incredibles 2 has proven itself admirably. And for those of you who can't get enough of the Parr family in action, a comic book miniseries and graphic novel starring them are on the way.
