IT Chapter Two Composer Calls It Andy Muschietti's 'Masterpiece'

IT Chapter Two

In the spotlight for most movies are the actors, the producers and the director (or directors). These are the people we see and hear promoting their movies the most often and we’ve come to expect good info from those sorts of people. But composers get to immerse themselves into these film worlds too, and composer Benjamin Wallfisch recently shared his experience with the upcoming film IT Chapter Two.

Speaking at Comic-Con 2019, composer Benjamin Wallfisch was candid about the upcoming IT Chapter Two. While he wasn’t blurting out a bunch of spoilers onstage, he did reveal the movie is director Andy Muschietti’s ‘masterpiece’ also calling the upcoming flick ‘cathartic.’

IT’s a really ambitious film. It’s Andy [Muschietti]’s masterpiece, it’s kind of growing from the first movie in a way which I dunno, I think none of us expected when we first started working on it. It’s incredibly powerful and emotional movie and it brings a cathartic end to this saga… I think you’re really gonna love it.

The composers on the panel all talked about how every experience on a movie set is different during the panel as well. Sometimes they only get a few weeks to figure out what a movie should sound like. Other times, they are able to really jump into the project and to visit the set.

Benjamin Wallfisch also did the music for IT back in 2017, so he can tell audiences a lot about the differences in the way the first movie and its sequel – which will be about the Adult Losers Club – will be framed. He was at Comic-Con’s ‘Musical Anatomy of a Superhero’ panel to celebrate his work in this past year’s Shazam! and Hellboy superhero projects, but his resume is extensive.

In addition to the aforementioned projects, he has also composed music for Blade Runner, Annabelle: Creation, Serenity, Hidden Figures, and the series Hostile Planet. His resume is eclectic and features some prominent box office wins and critically-acclaimed projects as well.

Now that we’re getting into the home stretch for IT Chapter Two, we’ve been able to see plenty from the upcoming film. The trailers have introduced us to the Adult Losers, juxtaposed them with their younger counterparts, and given us some hints regarding what scares are in store. Ultimately, all of that will be “cathartic,” if Benjamin Wallfisch is to be believed.

In lieu of there being a screening of the movie yet, Wallfisch’s early reaction is the closest thing we’ve gotten outside of footage to getting a real sense of what this movie has in store. On the bright side, IT Chapter Two will be based on a popular book by Stephen King. So, if you’ve read the book before, you should at least sort of know what to expect from the upcoming flick.

If you’d like to be surprised, I suggest skipping reading that or watching the famous Tim Curry miniseries. IT Chapter 2, aka “Andy’s Masterpiece” will be out on September 6. You can see what else is still coming out this year with our full movies schedule.
