SPOILERS for Disney+'s Loki are ahead!
Last week, Loki marked the introduction of another great villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Jonathan Majors’ He Who Remains turned out to be the man behind the curtain of the series. His appearance is a precursor to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where the Emmy-nominated Lovecraft Country star will portray Kang the Conqueror. Exciting, isn’t it?
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is not coming our way for some time, as the movie is expected to be released in early 2023. But thanks to fan artist BossLogic, we can start imagining how Kang the Conqueror will look when the character debuts on the big screen:
Whoa, that looks awesome! BossLogic was clearly inspired by the Marvel Comics source material for his ideas on how Jonathan Majors may look in the role. The fan art has Majors in blue makeup and the same purple helmet comic readers know well. Check out a comparison if you’re just getting to know Kang:
In Loki, Sylvie killed off He Who Remains, but as the character promised, his death led to the opening of the multiverse, and thus variants of himself. One of those variants will surely be Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror. In the comics, Kang is a time-traveling villain named Nathaniel Richards who is from the 31st century and is even a descendant of the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards. There’s a lot of possibilities looming for Kang and the MCU, but for now, this piece of fan art is a solid appetizer.
Back in September, we learned that Jonathan Majors would be playing Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and we’re now one step closer to him truly coming alive. Kang could very well be the next major villain in the MCU following Loki and Thanos considering Kang seems to be key to the multiverse storyline we know will be picked up in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and is rumored to also be prevalent in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
There are seven movies and a ton of Disney+ Marvel shows coming in between the latest release Black Widow and the third Ant-Man movie. And since Marvel decided to plant the seeds for the villain already, perhaps Jonathan Majors could have a larger role in the MCU in the next couple years leading up to it as well. Not to mention how Kang’s familial connections could set up the Fantastic Four reboot as well. At this point, maybe we'll even see Kang the Conqueror in costume for the Doctor Strange sequel prior to Quantumania!
As per usual in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have more questions than answers right now. I think that’s a good thing. And Jonathan Majors’ character did cap off his Loki appearance with “See you soon!,” so we certainly have that to look forward to!
