Another Original Star Wars Character Might Be Getting Their Own Movie

Obi-wan Kenobi is unquestionably one of the most popular characters in the Star Wars canon. Whether it's the Alec Guiness version from the original trilogy or Ewan McGregor from the prequels, the mentor Jedi knight has been around for generations to welcome new audiences into Jedi-hood. But will that popularity translate to the hero getting his own solo film? Apparently it will - if you can believe new rumors.

This story comes from an unnamed source over at the fansite Making Star Wars, so treat it with an appropriately sized grain of salt. If the report can be believed, then a recent surge of Obi-wan fans has led to producers deciding to move forward with an Obi-wan Kenobi solo/spinoff film. The source adds that the studio has been trying to shy away from Jedi and Sith characters in solo movies, but that the popularity of Obi-wan is too big to ignore.

As evidence of the character's high interest level, the source points to a recent poll/tournament that StarWars.com recently held in an attempt to determine the best Star Wars character. Taking down opponents like Darth Vader (finally!), Han Solo, R2-D2, Yoda and Qui-Gon Jinn in individual match-ups, Obi-wan Kenobi was named the most popular Star Wars character.

Right now, there are three Star Wars spin-off movies that are in development and aiming to come out in the years between the saga films (a.k.a Episode VII, Episode VIII and Episode IX). Gareth Edwards, who is coming off the massive success that was Godzilla, will be helming the first one of these movies, and one of the other two will be made by Chronicle's Josh Trank. Edwards' movie is based on a script by Gary Whitta, and Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg have individually been working on screenplays (though we don't know which one Trank is attached to make). Outside of that information, nothing has yet been confirmed about the titles by either Lucasfilm or Disney.

Given how much attention was paid to him in all six of the Star Wars movies, do you want to see Obi-wan Kenobi get his own solo film, or would you rather see the franchise broaden its horizon and focus on other characters? Answer our poll below and use the comments section to tell us who you want to see play the new Obi-wan: Ewan McGregor, or someone new?
