The green-clad DC space cops just can't catch a break. After the Ryan Reynolds-led Green Lantern failed to capture the imaginations of audiences in 2011, Warner Bros. put the characters on ice and pushed them all the way to the back of the current DC slate. At this point we likely won’t even see a Green Lantern solo film until well after the other Justice League members make their collective debuts. In fact, we’ve just learned about another potential delay to Green Lantern Corps, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to start worrying about the defenders of Sector 2814.
Based upon a new report from The Wrap, it seems that Warner Bros. has majorly shuffled a portion of its slated films. This decision has entailed moving Godzilla 2 from June 8, 2018 to March 22, 2019, as well as bumping Godzilla vs. King Kong May 29, 2020. Additionally, WB also revealed that a certain untitled DCEU film has experienced a one-month bump from June 19, 2020 to July 24, 2020. Although Warner has confirmed nothing, many have drawn the conclusion that this particular film is none other than Green Lantern Corps. If this is true, then it will only further distance the coming Green Lantern solo movie from the slated June 14, 2019 release date of the second Justice League film.
This news may come as somewhat discouraging to fans of Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and all of the rest. Green Lantern has had an incredibly rocky time on the silver screen in recent years, failing horribly in 2011 when Ryan Reynolds donned the green power ring, and forcing WB to re-reboot the DCEU with Man of Steel in 2013.
However, it’s worth noting that Warner Bros. has not confirmed whether or not this bumped DC film is even Green Lantern Corps at all. Many have simply made the assumption because the 2020 release date seems to line up with what we already knew about the film’s tentative release date. The one-month delay also doesn’t necessarily signal problems behind the scenes at WB, as this merely means that the postponed film will simply hit theaters two weeks after a competing Marvel project, as opposed to two weeks before.
We will bring you more information concerning all of the slated DCEU films as updates become available to us. If the delayed film does in fact turn out to be Green Lantern Corps, then expect to see it blast its way into theaters on July 24, 2020.
