If you are an old-fashioned person, one of the most daunting moments in your romantic life is working up the courage to ask your partner's father for their permission to marry their baby. While it's less common now than it was in previous years, it's an important tradition and it's rite of passage into marriage for those who keep the tradition alive. It's a sign of respect, trust, and principle -- an act of seeking approval from the parental figure in order to pay your dues to your elders. Even when you're both celebrities, that's still the concept.
Before Chris Pratt got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend Katherine Schwarzenegger, the Guardians of the Galaxy actor reached out to his partner's father, none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger, in order to ask his permission to marry his daughter. It's not every day that you find yourself working up the muster to talk to Arnold himself -- let alone to ask this very important, life-changing question to the fellow actor and former politician. Sure enough, even though Chris Pratt is a confident actor on big and small screens, he was understandably nervous to speak with Katherine's father.
Well, you know, I think any person who appreciates a tradition and asks a father for his daughter’s hand in marriage…it's inevitably going to be something that makes you a little nervous, but that's sort of the beauty of it, you know?
Chris Pratt's admission came during a recent conversation with Extra on the red carpet for this weekend's The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. While Katherine Schwarzenegger wasn't present for the premiere, the actor had nothing but positive things to say during this exciting moment in his life. And it was during this red carpet correspondence that Pratt got the chance to hear Schwarzenegger "singing" his praises for Pratt, to which Pratt joked that he "would love to hear Arnold sing." Sure enough, when it came to Arnold Schwarzenegger's response to the engagement news, he said the following:
That was really fantastic. I mean, she is so happy. They both are so happy. And as I said to him, he's such a likable guy. I love Chris. He's fantastic ... He did it the traditional way. So, he's a wonderful guy. They both look really great together. They are very happy together. So, you know, I wish all the best of luck.
