Spoilers for anyone not caught up with Orange is the New Black Season 4.
Season 4 of Orange Is the New Black made some big changes that could make for a very different show in Season 5. Certain plot twists have meant that a couple of characters won't be back for another round of prison drama. According to one actress whose character was seemingly written off the series, however, she might be back at some point to reprise the role. Lori Petty has this to say about a possible return for Lolly to the world of Orange Is the New Black:
I can't say for sure, but I absolutely think we will. They are just now filming episode one [of Season 5] and you know how we ended Season 4. They have a lot to deal with right now! I'm just waiting on the phone call to get back on the plane. I'm sure it will come, but we have 13 episodes and they've got a lot to take care of, so we'll see.
Lori Petty revealed her thoughts about Lolly returning to Orange Is the New Black in a chat with THR, and it's good to see that Petty has some optimism for what could be ahead for her and her character. Lolly didn't exactly get a happily-ever-after end when she made her grand exit in Season 4. For those who may have blocked out the events of Season 4 because they were so damn heartbreaking, here's a Lolly refresher:
Lolly saved Alex's life in an act that ultimately resulted in the death of Aydin, which escalated when she and Alex dismembered his corpse to bury it. Unfortunately, Lolly's mental illness meant that she couldn't process what she did as calmly as Alex. The body was eventually discovered, and Lolly was sent to Psych for Aydin's death. Given that Psych doesn't have an exemplary record for giving proper treatment to inmates, Lolly is likely in for a rough ride off-screen.
Lolly has been a part of Orange Is the New Black since Lori Petty joined the cast in Season 2. Petty managed to create a character who worked as comic relief without turning mental illness into a joke. Lolly was a lovable and quirky character who wasn't without her faults, but she definitely doesn't deserve to spend the rest of her sentence in Psych. Luckily for those of us who can't bear the thought of Lolly locked away in Psych forever, she should have the chance to make a comeback. Season 5 is in production, and Netflix has already ordered Seasons 6 and 7, so there are at least three seasons of Orange Is the New Black that could feature a return of Lori Petty to the cast.
Season 4 of Orange Is the New Black was released only a few weeks ago, so we won't get to see more of the show with or without Lori Petty as Lolly for a while.
