Sharp Objects Trailer Gives Hypnotic Look At HBO's New Murder Mystery

Potential viewers are finally getting a full look at Amy Adams' new HBO miniseries courtesy of an official trailer. Among the things teased is an enhanced sense of what to expect when it comes time to behold Sharp Objects. HBO offered its first glimpse of the adaptation back in April. The new trailer gives fans an array of things to sift through, including the dark reason Amy Adams' Camille has been drawn back to her small town. It has to do with a murder. You can watch the trailer below:

Set to arrive over the summer, the bleak thriller is an adaptation of Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn's novel of the same name. The story will be told over the course of eight episodes. Sharp Objects follows Camille (Amy Adams), a reporter assigned to cover a developing murder mystery that is unfolding in her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri. As the trailer teases, Camille is confronted by her haunting past and a less than enthusiastic welcome by her mother (Patricia Clarkson).

In its first full-length trailer, Sharp Objects gives the impression of similarities to True Detective's first season, with its murder mystery epicenter and overall essence. Whether or not the show can capture the same following is a story the ratings will have to tell. Like True Detective, Sharp Objects has the sense of being a prestige project and with its illustrious roster of talent; it will undoubtedly be an awards contender.

While the trailer mentions Big Little Lies, Sharp Objects feels more akin to the 2014 film Wild, which is not surprising given that all of them have been directed by Jean-Marc Vallée. It is important for these kinds of trailers to build anticipation without giving too much away and Sharp Objects' manages to do that very well. You get the sense of its dark tonality and the creeping suspense it will build over its two-month on-air window.

The HBO miniseries marks the third adaptation of one of Gillian Flynn's novels. Her novels Gone Girl and Dark Places have both been adapted into feature films. Sharp Objects is the first of her novels to be adapted into a TV series. The road to being brought to the small screen has been a long one. While Sharp Objects is the first novel of Flynn's to be published, it is the last to be adapted. You will not have to wait too much longer to find out if it has been worth the wait.

Sharp Objects premieres Sunday, July 8 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO. You can learn more about the show on its official site.
