This Is Us returned after dropping some huge reveals on its audience, and surprisingly, answers slowly rolled out throughout the episode. It even appeared to fix the big rift between Randall and Beth, as the two finally reconciled in the weeks leading up to his election. And yet, there's still that flash-forward in the future that seemed to show the two on bad terms, so what happened there? The answer may have been foreshadowed in the return.

Randall and Beth did reconcile, but will that last now that he's won the election? Randall's aggressive campaign and frequent trips to Philadelphia despite his living in Alpine set a precedent, and it stands to reason he'll be expected to continue making that long trek quite often. That means more time away from home, and more of Beth working to keep the family in order while Randall spends time in his office.

That didn't work out too well for Beth, and she was less than thrilled that Randall was more committed to his campaign than the various issues happening at home. The two had it out during This Is Us' return, and Randall said some harsh stuff to Beth viewers may have never expected him to say last season. There was even a scene of Randall sleeping on the couch, as Beth rushed to get him up before the kids saw.

There was something strange about Beth's acknowledging the person Randall is, and understanding he's the type of person who can't leave a project until he sees it through. Her understanding that about him doesn't mean she'll always be okay with it, and the future timeline seemingly showed the two may have split because of it. If they didn't divorce, there's certainly something happening between them as Randall asked adult Tess to call Beth as opposed to calling her himself.

That's an important detail to note, as future Randall was very clearly seen using a phone to talk to Toby not long before that scene. If Randall and Beth were together, one would think he would've called, or she would've known what the plan was prior to Tess calling. Basically, if This Is Us fans aren't convinced things are back to normal with Beth and Randall, there's enough to support there are more fights to come.

Which, quite frankly, is a bit devastating. Randall and Beth are the best couple (sans Jack and Rebecca) on This Is Us, and seeing that fight between them was tough to watch. Additionally, the two's marriage collapsing would absolutely put their kids through the wringer, and Deja and Tess are already going through a lot. This Is Us is known for making folks cry, but is it about to be known for ripping out hearts and stomping on them?

We shall see as This Is Us continues on NBC Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET. For a look at what else is happening on television in early 2019, visit our midseason premiere guide.
