Will Vikings Bring Back Rollo In Season 6? Here's What The Showrunner Told Us

Will Vikings bring back Rollo for Season 6? The series’ showrunner, Michael Hirst, has weighed in, and shortly before Vikings: Season 5 Volume 2 arrives on Blu-ray and DVD October 8! As fans will recall, Ragnar’s brother has been behind a lot of drama throughout the series’ run. Now that it is getting ready to embark on its final season, the chance to see Rollo has narrowed down to one two-part season.

After some time spent away, Rollo made his Vikings return in surprising fashion, backing Ivar against Lagertha in the war for Kattegat. He was not done bringing the shock. In the premiere for Season 5B, Rollo revealed that he had brought a huge twist with him. Rollo told Bjorn that he thinks he is Bjorn’s biological father, not his uncle.

He did not make a believer out of Bjorn, who continued to reject Rollo with whom he was once very close. Rollo wanted Bjorn and a deposed Lagertha to join him in Frankia. They refused and eventually headed to Wessex. With that, Rollo left, leaving one to wonder: have Vikings fans seen the last of Rollo? Showrunner Michael Hirst recently spoke with CinemaBlend ahead of the Vikings: Season 5 Volume 2 Blu-ray and DVD release, and said this when I asked if Rollo will return in Season 6:

Well, if I could tease that out a little bit. I would say 'yes' and 'no.' But Rollo’s re-appearance will be a huge surprise, as indeed it was rather a surprise to me. But I'll leave it to that. I don't want to be too evasive, but the answer in the long-term is both 'yes' and 'no.'

A “huge surprise”? I cannot wait to find out what it means! Time to speculate! Could Vikings fans see Rollo again, but in a flashback? Or will the show give viewers a glimpse of the statue that portrays the real-life Rollo? Hence, seeing him again but not seeing him. It is tough to know.

He could just show up in a surprising place, or at an even more surprising time. Who else cannot wait for Season 6 to start and eventually find out? If Rollo returns for it, he has some unfinished business, and in other ways, he does not.

He finally revealed that he could have fathered Bjorn and professed that he had always loved Lagertha. Having been rejected by both Bjorn and Lagertha, there is not much left between Rollo and his brother’s family.

The events of Season 6 can always change that. When Vikings left off, Bjorn had defeated Ivar and been declared the King of Kattegat. Ivar murdered his wife, Freydis, and then slipped away and out of his brother’s grasp. Could something happen to Bjorn that brings Rollo back on the scene? A certain sneak peek has me worried it could.

With Vikings: Season 5 Volume 2 releasing in just a few days, on October 8, fans will be able to relive much of Rollo's recent drama before long. Those who are having a hard time waiting for Season 6 will also be able to tide themselves over by enjoying a host of special features, including audio commentary with series creator Michael Hirst and Vikings star Gustaf Skarsgard, deleted scenes, extended and unrated episodes, and features on Ragnar's sons and the King and the Warrior Bishop.

Considering Rollo’s rich history with the series, it would be surprising if he is not tied into the final season in some way. Either way, it is going to be a ride!

A premiere date for Vikings’ sixth and final season has not been announced yet, so stay tuned. It will arrive on History, eventually. Vikings: Season 5 Volume 2 Blu-ray will be released October 8. In the meantime, there are a lot of fall premieres arriving to help tide you over.
