On My Block just capped off a strong third season on Netflix that concluded with a shocking finale. It involved a cliffhanger that’s just begging to be resolved, but Netflix has yet to give the series the green light for a fourth season, leaving On My Block’s future in flux. However, that hasn’t stopped cast member Jason Genao from sharing his hopes for his character:
I’d love to see the adult take on Ruby because I know what child Ruby is and little baby innocent Ruby is. That’d be a really interesting thing to find out.
Light spoilers incoming. The finale ended with two-year flash forward that revealed the dissolution of the core crew’s friendships. As of result, Monse, Ruby, Jamal, Caear and Jasmine are all in different places – both geographically and socially – when viewers leave them.
Ruby, in particular, has undergone a vast transformation over the past few seasons, having gone from being a bright-eyed, enthusiastic teen to a jaded and depressed cynic who’s had a near-death experience. Believe it or not, Ruby isn’t the only On My Block character to experience changes.
Diego Tinoco, who plays newly christened gang leader Caesar, also told THR that he would like to dive into the bleaker elements of his character. Yet he still wants him to find love with a certain someone:
I'm excited for Cesar to explore just the darker side of everything, because he's been through so much traumatic experiences and for him to turn at the end, it really shows what life has done to him. But in the end, I want him to end up with the lovely Monse.
Monse herself, Sierra Capri, echoed her co-star’s sentiments and is curious as to what their first interaction could look in a Season 4. Judging by the way things left off, it’s safe to assume they might not be on the best of terms if (or when) they cross paths again.
All of this, of course, depends on whether or not On My Block can secure a renewal. The show hasn’t become a pop culture phenomenon like Stranger Things, which is currently heading into its fourth season. However, On My Block has proven to be a modest success and has also built a devoted fanbase since its debut in 2018. It's also found its way into Netflix's new Top 10 feature.
This also isn’t the first time that the show’s past has been uncertain, as production on this past season was delayed due to contract negotiations with the main cast.
Unfortunately, because Netflix doesn’t release viewership or subscriber numbers to the public, it’s hard to get an idea of how just how many people are tuning in for the Freeridge crew’s adventures. A renewal from the streaming giant would probably lead to a fourth season airing sometime in 2021. Until we get some kind of confirmation on its status, you can stream On My Block Season 3 on Netflix now.
