High School Musical is currently celebrating its fifteenth anniversary, and one of the big reasons for the film’s success is Ashley Tisdale. The actress played resident diva Sharpay Evans throughout the film series While filming the franchise, the actor decided to have a rhinoplasty. Years later, she revealed the traumatic aftermath she experienced after having plastic surgery.

Ashley Tisdale shot to superstardom as part of the cultural phenomenon High School Musical, with the film series sending her acting career to new heights while jumpstarting her musical career. Though amid her fame and success, some may have been unaware that Tisdale had to get rhinoplasty to relieve some underlying health issues. Over a decade after having the surgery, the actor took to her website to speak on the judgment she received afterward:

In the aftermath and the hardest part, was not the recovery but the media who constantly tried to paint a picture of me as someone who didn’t like their appearance. I loved myself, but I was just a very unaware person at that time (as you all have seen my wardrobe choices LOL!). I was proud of who I was back then, and still proud now. Plastic surgery wasn’t culturally accepted then like it is now. When I got it done I was scrutinized, judged, and made to feel ashamed over my decision. I made a decision that was no one’s business (and is STILL no one’s business) and for that decision, I was constantly made to feel bad about it.

Ashley Tisdale’s traumatic aftermath with her rhinoplasty wasn’t the first time she had to address issues regarding plastic surgery. Last year, she spoke on having her breast implants removed after having them in for years. She noted a change in her lifestyle and mindset as the reasons for their removal. The actor apparently came to terms with her self-image while learning to appreciate her body.

Ashley Tisdale’s ordeal with the media spoke unfortunately speaks a lot to the “build you up to tear you down” mentality that tends to happen sometimes. It's unfortunate that this happened to Tisdale, but it's nice to see that she's taking control of the narrative.

The media scrutiny didn’t affect Tisdale’s career either. In the years since High School Musical, she's starred in a number of projects such as The Masked Dancer, Charming and the video game House of Ashes.

The weight of celebrity can be difficult and, because she started so young, Ashley Tisdale would probably know that better than most people. While she does still have those unpleasant memories, the fact that she can set the record straight will hopefully serve as a source of comfort for her and fans.
