TV Recap: Big Brother 10 - Week 4 Nominations

On tonight’s episode of Big Brother we found out who won the endurance HoH competition and who they nominated. In addition to that, Dan got his first official America’s Player orders and got to work trying to get America’s choice up on the block. Speaking of Dan, he also took some time out to give Michelle some speech lessons.

So before we get to all of the usual BB drama, can we just talk about Michelle’s inability to say “water” correctly? I get that people have accents. Being from Long Island, I realize I don’t say everything the way people from outside of that area do. So I don't see anything wrong with Michelle having an accent. That said, I don’t totally understand why she had such a hard time pronouncing the “R” in water. It’s not like “R” is a foreign sound to make. Though I did love the Sesame Street-style graphics BB threw in at the bottom of the screen during the “Water” lesson.

Ok, enough with that tangent. As is often the case, the women prevailed during the Head of Household competition. One by one, people dropped from the wall. Jerry and Libra were the first to go, followed by Dan, Ollie, Memphis and Jessie (who probably burned up most of his energy talking about what muscles they were all flexing during the competition). Renny put up a good fight, outlasting some of the more physically strong players but eventually she had enough and dropped. It came down to Michelle and April. After being up on the wall for a couple of hours they started discussing the possibility of striking a deal. April said she wouldn’t put Michelle up if she won HoH. She added that she would also keep Jessie safe. She went so far as to “swear on Boston’s life.” I have no idea how you can swear on the life of a city but she did it and Michelle accepted the deal.

Once Michelle dropped and April won HoH there was the usual crying and hugging that almost always follows endurance comps in the BB house. Credit needs to be given to Dan, who offered motivational speeches to Renny, Michelle and April while they were up on the wall. This will have hopefully put him in their favor, or at least, weakened the target on his back. It doesn’t hurt to be supportive to people during these types of comps. Jessie, who is supposed to be close with Michelle was totally useless in terms of support. From what we were shown, the guy did nothing to boost Michelle’s morale or encourage her to hang in there.

Dan was told that America chose Jessie as the target for eviction. No surprise there as the guy’s douchebaggery has been regularly apparent on the show and from what I’ve read on various BB sites from people who are glued to the feeds, he’s not much different than the edit he’s been getting. Dan got to work right away and sat down with April to whisper to her about putting Jessie up. Something he said to her caused her to think that maybe he’s the twist. Granted, the whole “America’s Player” twist was done before so it’s not surprising that the houseguests are going to be suspicious of any possible twists but seriously, they figured that out (or at least, suspected it) pretty fast. I just hope Dan can get through the week without blowing his chances at the money.

Keesha started buddying up with Memphis, hoping he might be a possible ally now that Angie and Steven are both gone. April noticed the two of them hanging out in the sauna and claimed it was “disrespectful.” Not exactly sure how her spending time with Memphis is disrespectful towards April but then again, April doesn’t need a reason to talk crap about Keesha behind her back. Renny was in the kitchen when April was griping about Keesha to Libra and she took that information to Keesha, just to warn her that April has her eye on her. Keesha was irritated but it didn’t stop her from spending even more time with Memphis and even hinting that April might be putting Jessie up. I don’t think that was the best move on Keesha’s part. I do think it’s a good idea to form a loose alliance with Memphis but giving up any information about what April’s doing can only hurt her if it gets back to April. She had nothing to gain from repeating that information, no matter how subtle she was about it.

In the end, April did choose to put Jessie and Memphis up. She told Michelle that while she was putting Jessie up, he wasn’t the target. That’s crap if you ask me but Michelle seemed to buy it (for now anyway). During her nomination speech, April said she put Jessie up because he’s a physical and mental threat to her. If she really believes that’s true then she doesn’t think much of her own intelligence. Meanwhile, she used Memphis winning the car as her excuse for putting him. She probably would’ve put him up even if he didn’t win the car but using the “you won the car” thing as a reason wasn’t a bad strategy, if only to go the whole “it’s not personal” route.

Finally, the next America’s Choice mission will be for Dan to hug someone for ten seconds. If America wants to make it easy on him, they should probably pick Renny. I’m sure Dan could come with an easy excuse for giving her a friendly ten-second squeeze without it being too creepy. If they want to make it hard on him, voters might want to pick Memphis or Jessie. We’ll find out who America picked on Tuesday night and whether or not Dan was able to pull it off.
