TV Recap: Heroes - Eris Quod Sum

Suresh sells out again, like that's really any surprise. Family dynamics come even further into play, and things may not be what they seem. Matt and Daphne finally team up, but things definitely aren't what they seem. Nobody knows what the heck's really going on with the Petrelli's, especially the Petrelli kids. Hiro embarks on a vision quest and has his path chosen for him.

No introductory monologue tonight. instead, we go right to Africa where Ando and the African are trying to convince Hiro to go back in time in order to figure out how to defeat the villains. Hiro still has past-phobia and refuses. The African tells him that evil forces are gathering and Hiro will either choose his own path or have it chosen for him. Hiro turns and looks at one of the African's paintings, which fades into the standoff between Suresh, Nathan, and Tracy.

Suresh is trying to look menacing while he tells the others that they've ruined everything. He tells them that their synthetic abilities may be the key to helping Maya get rid of her abilities. He asks them for one more sample, but Nathan refuses and tells him that it's over. Suresh jumps over them, pulls Maya out of her cocoon, and jumps through the skylight.

...and apparently makes a run for Pinehearst, where we next see him watching Maya in a glass room. Arthur walks up and, after some exposition from Suresh, goes into the room and steals Maya's powers. Maya's overjoyed but still wants nothing to do with Suresh. She's given a passport and some cash and walks out of Pinehearst and - hopefully - out of the show.

Suresh asks Arthur to help him regulate his powers. Figuring a fully working formula may help Suresh, Arthur shows him the two halves of the old formula and asks him to help them make it work. Suresh finally shows that he's not a complete moron and points out that he's been taken in by those with hidden agendas before. Arthur just shrugs his shoulders and tells Suresh that he's free to go if he doesn't want to be there. Suresh, realizing that his bluff has been called, asks for some test subjects.

Sylar, still hooked up to the machines, has a vision of Angela coming to visit him. Dream Angela tells him that Peter needs his help and that he needs to get up. Sylar argues that his abilities are being blocked, but Angela counters that - if his abilities are being blocked - how is she talking to him? She goes on to tell him that he's capable of much more than he knows. Sylar then wakes up and busts out of the cell. He stops by his mother's room to tell her (though she's still unconscious) that he'll save Peter.

Peter's lying on a gurney and having flashbacks of Nathan telling him his dad's dead and realizing his dad is alive and stealing his powers. When he wakes up, his dad is watching over him and explains that Peter's powers are gone forever and his body is still adjusting to the loss. Arthur apologizes for lying to his family about being dead and tries to convince Peter that his mom is the evil one and that he is trying to save the world. Peter doesn't believe it and swears to take Arthur down, even without his powers. Arthur realizes that Peter's not going to help him voluntarily and, since he previously had powers, his body is already primed for the formula, so he'll be Suresh's first test subject.

Just as Suresh is about to inject Peter with the formula, Sylar busts in and throws everyone across the room. Unfortunately, he doesn't know about Suresh's powers. While Sylar is releasing Peter, Suresh attacks him from behind and repeatedly slams his head into the ground, "killing" him, though we know Sylar will recover. Arthur comes back and tries to stop Peter from escaping, but he gets away. Arthur settles for stopping Suresh from beating on Sylar anymore and reveals that he knows Sylar is his son.

When Sylar wakes up, Arthur tells him his version of how Sylar came to not grow up a Petrelli, including a story of Angela's dream-vision of what Sylar will become that was so frightening that Angela tried to drown Sylar in a bathtub. Sylar appears to buy into Arthur's story because when Peter shows up to get him out of Pinehearst, Sylar throws him out of the window.

Claire and her mom, apparently just getting home from their puppet caper, pull up in their driveway and see all the lights flickering. When they get into the house, they find Claire's brother unconscious on the ground and Elle shorting out the computer. Claire tries to force Elle to leave and Elle, in turn, tries to use her powers on Claire, but Elle's lost control of her abilities and Claire can't feel pain, anyway. Claire's brother stops the fight by dumping a bucket on Elle and she explains that she's lost control of her powers and couldn't think of anywhere else to go except for HRG's house for help. Elle shows Claire the Pinehearst card that Daphne gave her and says that they may be able to help her gain control of her abilities. Claire, thinking that her inability to feel pain may be caused by something similar to Elle's loss of control, decides that they should go to Pinehearst together. Claire's mom wants to call HRG, but Claire convinces her mom to let her take care of this herself. After a near-disaster in the plane when Elle's powers start to short out the navigation systems and Claire helps ground her out, they finally arrive at Pinehearst. Just as they're about to go in, Peter flies out of a window seven stories up and lands a few feet from them. Peter chokes out an explanation that his powers were stolen. Claire wants to take him to get help, but Elle sees her chance to be freed from her powers and goes into Pinehearst.

Arthur and Maury realize that Daphne sabotaged her own efforts to recruit Matt, but they give her a chance to redeem herself - by killing Matt. Maury kinda hates this idea and begins to rebel. He gets in Arthur's face and tells him that he won't let Arthur kill his son, but Arthur just snaps his neck. Daphne begs for another way, but Arthur's not hearing it.

Daphne shows up at Matt's apartment and pulls a gun on him. She tells him that they sent her to kill him or they'll kill her. Matt agrees to let her kill him if it's the only way to save her. She tells him to turn around and puts the gun to the back of his head. He tells her more about his vision of the future - of them falling in love, getting married, and starting a family - and she wusses out and apologizes for not saving his dad. Matt doesn't particularly care, other than being surprised that his dad died trying to save him. Knox shows up and seemingly kills Daphne and Matt, but it's revealed to just be a vision that Matt put in his head. After Knox leaves, thinking he's accomplished his mission, Daphne tries to get Matt to run, but he refuses saying that taking down people like Pinehearst is what he's about. They make plans to go to Primatech for help.

Back at Suresh's lab, Nathan's called HRG in, figuring he's the only one who'll know what to do. HRG's brought along Meredith, making for an awkward explanation of Nathan, Meredith, and HRG's family dynamic to Tracy. The plan is for Tracy and Nathan to go to Primatech for tests to make sure Suresh didn't do anything permanently harmful to them, but Nathan gets a call from Claire asking him to come see Peter and not tell anyone. He and Tracy somehow ditch HRG and Meredith and show up... wherever Peter and Claire are. Peter tells Nathan that their dad is back and what he's trying to do. Nathan wants to confront him right away and Peter tries to talk him out of it, saying Arthur is too dangerous. Nathan pretends to agree and says he'll send the Justice Department after Pinehearst, but tells Tracy that he's going after his dad as soon as they leave the room. Tracy reveals that she's been drawing a consultant fee from Pinehearst for years and could open up some doors for Nathan. Nathan demurs, insisting that he'd rather kick the doors down.

In matching scenes, Arthur and Peter each wonder how he could have survived that fall. Sylar gives Arthur a mystified look and agrees that it's odd. Peter speculates to Claire that Sylar must have used his powers to cushion Peter's fall and he's really still on the "good" side.

Arthur receives a call from Daphne saying that their plan worked - Matt believes she's on his side. Presumedly, Daphne's going to become a mole for Arthur inside Primatech.

Finally, back to Africa. Since Hiro refuses to time-travel, the African mixes up more of his vision quest paste. Just when it seems that nothing will happen, Hiro's eyes go white and he falls back, in a trance. Ando panics and tries to wake Hiro up and the African explains that it;'s just as he said - either Hiro will choose his own path, or his path will be chosen for him. From the previews, it looks like next episode will largely use Hiro's visions of the past to explore the early history of Primatech's founders.
