I Can't Believe Madam Secretary's Elizabeth And Henry Got Married In Real Life, Only To Play Another Married Couple On TV
Art imitating life imitating art.
It’s been almost seven years since Madam Secretary ended, and it’s still being talked about. The CBS political thriller ran for six seasons, and those six seasons are not the only things to come out of the show. Thanks to Madam Secretary, co-stars Téa Leoni and Tim Daly found each other. They played husband and wife Henry and Elizabeth McCord and tied the knot IRL just last year. I still can’t believe they got married in real life, and now they’re once again playing a married couple.
There have been plenty of couples who met while working together, and who continued to work together. Leoni and Daly began dating in 2014, just a few months after Madam Secretary premiered, and their relationship is as strong as ever. So strong that they are playing husband and wife on TV for the first time since becoming husband and wife for NBC’s Newlyweds. Premiering in October on the 2026 TV schedule, the series follows a free-spirited woman and buttoned-up professor who “marry impetuously after a whirlwind courtship.”
Since this marks the couple’s first project together since tying the knot, the excitement is likely all over the place. For Newlyweds, they unsurprisingly came as a package deal. Per Deadline, Leoni shared during NBCUniversal’s Backlot press event that they were “kind of sniffing around” to work together again. She reflected on how fun Madam Secretary was and how they wanted to find that kind of joy again in the midst of all that’s going on in the world:
We had a lot of fun on Madam Secretary. The world got darker, and we wanted to get lighter. We thought we’ve done this particular medium, and loved it, and we wanted to spend our days together.
Newlyweds couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. Not only do they play a married couple, but it’s also a fun show. Additionally, Daly couldn’t help but point out that playing a married couple while actually married is a fun experience, and I feel like that would be a dream for any couple. The former Private Practice star shared:
Listen, we spent six years pretending to be married on TV, and I would get to do it again, but we actually are married. It’s a miracle, it’s really fun, it’s cool, and we still like each other.
I always love it when actors who are together in real life are together in a show or movie. Or better yet, are enemies in a show or movie. That chemistry and bond make the acting all the more genuine because it is real. While Leoni and Daly were together for most of Madam Secretary’s run, it’s definitely different playing a married couple while also married as opposed to just dating.
Fans will soon be able to see Leoni and Daly in wedded bliss when Newlyweds premieres on NBC on Friday, October 23 at 8:30 p.m. ET, streaming the next day with a Peacock subscription. Even though they are no longer Henry and Elizabeth, it will be exciting to see how they are as a new TV. Unfortunately, Madam Secretary isn’t streaming anywhere, but can be bought on platforms such as YouTube, Fandango, and Apple TV.
