The Surprising Way Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Will Kick Off In The Midseason Premiere

The first half of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 came to an ominous end back in December with the reveal that Dr. Radcliffe's helpful Life Model Decoy wasn't going to be very helpful anymore. A.I.D.A. gained awareness after reading the Darkhold, and she formed a secret agenda against the humans who controlled her. Well, according to a sneak peek of the upcoming midseason premiere, A.I.D.A. won't be keeping her secret much longer. Check it out!

For those of us who expected A.I.D.A. to last a few episodes into the second half of Season 4 before making an overt move against her creators, the sneak peek will come as a big surprise. A.I.D.A. has evidently had enough of hiding her awareness from the humans around her, and their intention to deactivate her pushed her to attack. Radcliffe's move to put her on pause to chat with Fitz about ways to upgrade her software probably didn't make her feel any better about them. She has feelings and independence now, and how many of us wouldn't at least want to lash out if somebody tried to knock us out and then start talking about ways to improve us? Sure, we might not physically attack and initiate a plot to overthrow any establishments, but it's not difficult to see why A.I.D.A. was sick of faking her obedience and is ready to go rogue.

It's possible that the existence of the May-bot made A.I.D.A.'s decision to attack in the sneak peek a lot easier. She could have tried to talk her way out of the situation a lot more than she did in the clip, but she has no need of keeping her awareness secret anymore now that she has infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. with another L.M.D.

All in all, it looks like the second half of Season 4 will feel an awful lot like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Age of A.I.D.A. The Sokovia Accords that have been such a point of contention in the Marvel Universe didn't do anything to stop yet another artificial intelligence uprising. Life Model Decoys like A.I.D.A. clearly aren't as big of a physical threat as Ultron was in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but they will have the advantage of blending in with humans. Ultron stuck out in any crowd; A.I.D.A. can hide in plain sight. If she has the chance to build others like her, the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are in for a major conflict in trying to fix Radcliffe's mistake. Who knows? Maybe we'll be in for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Civil War next fall.

Of course, low ratings for Season 4 mean that we may not get a Season 5 if more people don't start watching. Tune in to ABC on Tuesday, January 10 at 10 p.m. ET to catch the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. midseason premiere, and don't forget to take a look at our midseason TV premiere schedule.
