The Cruel Intentions Series Just Took A Big Step Forward

Have you been lacking a TV drama about privileged and evil high school students since Gossip Girl ended? Are you ready for some serious 90’s nostalgia? Well we’ve got some good news for you. One of the most quintessential 90’s movies of all time is being developed as a new tv series by NBC, and thinks appear to be moving forward rather quickly.

As we reported previously, NBC has been developing a TV series based off of 1999’s incestuous drama Cruel Intentions. Now it appears that things are progressing rather well, and the network has ordered a pilot for the new series which will also serve as a sequel to the film. That’s right people, this is actually in the same continuity as the beloved film starring Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Sarah Michelle Gellar

TV Line has reported the official synopsis of the potential new TV show and it is as follows:

Cruel Intentions picks up over 15 years after the hit movie left off. It follows the beautiful and cunning Kathryn Merteuil as she vies for control of Valmont International as well as the soul of Bash Casey, the son of her brother, who was the late Sebastian Valmont, and Annette Hargrove. Upon discovering his late father’s legacy in a hidden journal, Bash is introduced to a world of sex, money, power and corruption he never could have imagined.

Honestly, this sounds pretty great. As a cooky Cruel Intentions fan, I’m excited at the possibility of seeing Kathryn on my TV every week. She’s one of the most deliciously evil characters in modern cinema, and Sarah Michelle Gellar’s portrayal is one of the best of her career. So now the question is: will SMG take part in the series if it goes to TV?

I’d say it’s a strong possibility. Sarah Michelle Gellar is primarily known as a television star after all. In addition to her iconic role as the title character in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, she also led two more series with thriller Ringer and comedy The Crazy Ones with Robin Williams. While neither of her last two series made it to a second season, she’s always been active on the television scene, and it would make sense for her to return to the role she created in 1999. When speaking of a Buffy reboot, SMG always said it wouldn’t be age appropriate for to be fighting vamps, but since Cruel Intentions will follow and older version of Kathryn it would make sense for her to sign on.

Of course this is all speculation, as a pilot order is no guarantee for a full fledged series. Although, it seems like a rather smart plan given the reboot-heavy climate we’re currently in. 90’s nostalgia is ruling the day, and Cruel Intentions is such an iconic 90’s movie that people very well may tune in to see all the twists, turns, and cruelty.

Also, I’m just going to put it out there that it’s bananas that Annette and Sebastian got pregnant during their first and only sexual encounter. I guess Counting Crows’ “Colorblind” is some serious baby-making music.

We’ll continue to update you on Cruel Intentions as more information becomes public.
