It's hard for me to imagine virtual reality becoming an integral part of gaming. That has nothing to do with the technology itself, which seems to have come a long way over the years. My skepticism just comes down to price and my own inexperience.

In one of this week's top stories, Sony said their virtual reality headset will cost about as much as a console. Until that price point gets a lot lower, it's tough to imagine VR becoming widespread. Gaming is an expensive hobby as-is, so convincing players to double their hardware investment is going to be an uphill battle.

Like me, a lot of people haven't actually had hands-on time with the new virtual reality headsets either. That makes the technology an even harder sell. Videos on YouTube of people using Oculus don't really do it justice. You need to actually wear the headset to decide if it's for you. I hope that the companies trying to making VR into a mainstream gaming feature host a lot of public demos prior to launch or it might remain a niche.
