Now here's a clever way to stop piracy: lock achievements to post-launch patches. Very, very clever. While the Xbox One hasn't been cracked (yet) there are already some nifty new ways that developers are utilizing and leveraging the software side to ensure that only legitimate players will get the most out of the game.
Over on the official Halo Waypoint website, 343 Industries revealed that in addition to the 400 available achievements already included in the Halo: The Master Chief Collection bundle, they also have additional achievements scheduled to go live post-launch.
As noted in the post...
“Halo: The Master Chief Collection ships with 400 achievements worth 4000 gamerscore. However, your journey through Halo: The Master Chief Collection is an ongoing one, and as part of our launch content update, we will be rolling out another 50 achievements worth 500 gamerscore. For this round of achievements, we wanted to focus on community and the new multiplayer features being offered by the new maps and modes within Halo 2: Anniversary multiplayer.”
I think it's an interesting tactic by developers and publishers to ensure that you still have to log online to get the full experience. That's not to mention that the game has a massive day-one patch that clocks in at 20GB.
This is what I like to consider as future-proof digital rights media. Cracking the Xbox One and making copies of a game like Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be rendered useless without the 20GB day-one patch and other features locked behind a DRM wall, such as additional achievements that can only be accessed via having a legitimate box that can log into the Xbox Live servers.
I imagine we'll be seeing a lot more digital rights management methods of this sort implemented into games throughout eighth-gen gaming.
