‘Shut Up!’ Anne Hathaway Just Celebrated 25 Years Of The Princess Diaries
It's a celebration fit for a queen.
As someone who grew up watching The Princess Diaries and Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement on repeat, it’s wild to think that the first movie came out 25 years ago. Honestly, to that I say with the utmost shock and enthusiasm: "Shut up!" However, that’s exactly how long it's been, and Anne Hathaway is celebrating the milestone with a throwback BTS video and a very, very sweet message.
In honor of The Princess Diaries' 25th Anniversary, Anne Hathaway posted a montage of BTS clips featuring her, the cast and director Garry Marshall that look like they came right off a DVD bonus feature. It’s so nostalgic and joyful, and it’s seriously the best way to honor the actress's first film:

To this day, The Princess Diaries is one of Hathaway’s best films; its sequel is considered one of the best rom-coms, and the anticipation surrounding a third movie remains very high. So, yes, getting a post like this from the actress means the world. For most of my life, I’ve looked up to Mia and dreamed of having slumber parties like hers and falling in love with a guy like Chris Pine’s Nicholas from Princess Diaries 2. My love for these movies truly has never faded, and the fact that it’s already been 25 years is hard to believe.
It’s magical to see that these movies mean as much to Anne Hathaway as they do to the fans. In her caption, the Mia actress made that very clear too, as she wrote:
25 years later and it’s still one of the most magical things that has ever happened to me! Thank you all for loving The Princess Diaries as much as I do- I am forever grateful for my PD family!! Love you Garry, miss you every day xx
That final part of her caption is for Garry Marshall, who directed the first two films and passed away in 2016. Between him and this iconic cast that included Julie Andrews and more, this truly felt like a dream team.
Now, some of the team is getting back together to tell a story about Mia Thermopolis for the first time in over two decades. Carrying on Marshall’s legacy, Adele Lim will direct Princess Diaries 3. Meanwhile, the author of the books praised the script for the new movie, calling the most recent iteration of it “amazing” and something she’s “100 percent behind.”
Anne Hathaway also shared how excited she is to return as Mia on Radio Andy, saying that she thinks the team is “moving in the right direction” after having to start over. Now, because she is pregnant with her third child, it’s a bit unclear when Princess Diaries 3 will happen. However, all the enthusiasm and love for this franchise makes me believe we will get it eventually.
