Is An Original Romantic Comedy Actually Possible?

Sure, romantic comedies aren't really the most original genre-- they all pretty much happen the same way, and the only question going into it is whether the jokes will be funny, and the two famous main characters will look good together onscreen. But still, it's always nice when an actual original idea is turned into a movie, even if it's probably going to be the same movie we've seen 20 times.

Actually, Jeremy Garelick's pitch to Columbia Pictures, while being a romantic comedy, sounds pretty original after all. Variety writes that it's about two best friends who grow up, have kids, and then those kids fall in love. It sounds not all that unlike the plot of the Broadway show The Fantasticks, which is a pretty original piece of work in itself. Or, as Garelick so delicately puts it, "It's what happens when your best friend's son knocks up your daughter."

Sounds awkward-- and probably hilarious. Garelick, got started as an assistant to Joel Schumacher, but is all over the place right now, writing comedy scripts The Hangover and Murray at Large as well as a TV pilot called Monkey Business. Maybe by the time this movie comes out Garelick will be a giant name in comedy, and this idea, which sounds so original right now, will be written off as "derivative Garelickian" or something. You just can't catch a break in this world, can you?
