Captain Marvel Could Pair Charlize Theron With Angelina Jolie

We've been hearing rumors swirling around for a while now that Angelina Jolie might be a candidate in line to potentially take the helm of Marvel Studios' upcoming superhero film Captain Marvel. Today that story is expanding a little bit, as now there is talk not only that Jolie will direct, but that she might bring along Charlize Theron to star.

This story should definitely be taken with a gigantic grain of salt, but according to a source at OK! Magazine (via Yahoo!), recent months have seen a deep friendship forged between Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron, and that friendship could possibly result in the two women teaming up for Marvel's first female-superhero led movie. The source even suggested that Theron deciding to work on Captain Marvel could be what gets Jolie to commit to the project, saying,

Marvel has been courting Angie to direct the project and Charlize is a clear fan favourite for the starring role. If Charlize were to get the part, Angie would almost certainly sign on to work with her new pal.

Right off the bat, there is something fishy about this story. It's true that Charlize Theron has been wowing action fans recently thanks to her stunning performance in George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road, but saying that she is the fan favorite to play Captain Marvel might be considered a bit of a stretch - mostly because it's really been actresses like Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt and Katheryn Winnick who have garnering the most attention in that department. That being said, it's not like Charlize Theron wouldn't be a great choice to play the first ever live-action Carol Danvers, so who knows.

As for Angelina Jolie potentially directing Captain Marvel, it would definitely be an interesting choice. Between In The Land of Blood and Honey and Unbroken, Jolie has shown an inclination towards telling big screen stories of real-life drama and struggles of the human spirit, and while it wouldn't be at all impossible to hit on those themes in a comic book movie, it would definitely be a major change of pace for her as a filmmaker. At this point, all talk of her connection to Marvel is based on stories with unnamed sources, so it's hard to say if there actually is a connection, but she would be an interesting choice for the gig.

Do you think Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron might make an interesting pair to join up as director-lead actor for Captain Marvel? Or would you be more interested in seeing Marvel Studios go in a different direction with the aesthetic and the character for the movie?
