Did Emma Stone Confirm The New Spider-Man Slings Artificial Webs?

Emma Stone showed up at the Golden Globes last night sporting the trademark platinum blonde dye job of Gwen Stacy, the character she'll be playing in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot. And while she was there thanks to her Globes-nominated performance in the comedy Easy A, she was obviously going to get barraged with Spider-Man questions on the red carpet, and MTV's Josh Horowitz was definitely going to be the one to do it. While she stonewalled him on most of the basic questions he threw out there-- "You're just going to have to wait and see, Josh" she said in a tone just verging on total annoyance-- he managed to catch her on the issue that's been tearing up certain nerd circles for the last week: is Spider-Man going to be shooting his webs out of a device?

If you look closely at the first image of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man released last week, there seems to be a disc-shaped device on his wrist, in the exact spot where the web-slinging starts. In Sam Raimi's version of the character the webs sprouted naturally from his wrists, but it looked like director Marc Webb might have Peter Parker inventing some sort of web-making technology and strapping it on his wrist. If we're reading Emma Stone's very reluctant admission correctly, that's exactly what happened: "It's a device," she told MTV after some hemming and hawing. You can see it for yourself in the video below. We'll talk a bit more after.

The thing is, "it's a device" could mean just about anything. It's not like this mysterious little disc is featured heavily in the released image-- it could easily be something prosthetic attached to the costume that will be removed in post-production. Or it could mean that this version of Peter Parker is a super-genius who invented technology to create webs. OR it could mean it's just a device that he attaches to his natural web-producing glands (or whatever) in his wrists for easier gunk-slinging. You can tell I've already run out of patience with all this speculation, and I'm getting more than a little depressed realizing we've got another year and a half of this before the movie finally comes out July 3, 2012. Sorry, Emma Stone-- your'e going to be fielding a lot more questions like this for a looooong time.
