Will Forte took part in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session over the weekend where he once again declared his interest in bringing MacGruber 2 to the big screen. And he even teased that he will start work on a script for the sequel in the very near future too. In fact, alongside his writing cohorts, he might start scribing in the next few weeks.
After being asked about the state of MacGruber 2, and what can be done to make sure that the comedy does actually make it to the big screen, Forte explained:
I don’t know! Jorma, John and I have been crazy busy, but we’re absolutely gonna write the shit out of that thing as soon as we have time. And we will start to have time in a few weeks. Thanks for your patience. Already have a great outline in the works.
MacGruber first made his debut on Saturday Night Live back in January 2007. It was a blatant parody of MacGyver, the adventure television series that was on air from 1985-1992. Each of these shorts revolved around MacGruber, who is a special operations agent, trying to deactivate a ticking bomb. Unfortunately, he would always get distracted by a plethora of personal issues, which would then end in the bomb’s detonation - as well as the death of MacGruber and his companions. You can watch a sample of the skit below:
At Saturday Night Live, MacGruber developed a fervent fan-base. This resulted in the character appearing in a crossover Pepsi advert, and he then got his own spin-off film that was released in 2010. Sadly, the film didn’t manage to connect with its audience on any level, and it ultimately only grossed a total of $9.3 million worldwide (the movie was made for $10 million). This failure came despite the fact that the feature starred Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and the acting prowess of Val Kilmer, Ryan Phillippe and Powers Boothe. Because of the movie’s disastrous theatrical experience, there was a time when the idea of a MacGruber 2 sounded impossible, but the film has gained a cult following over the years, which is likely what’s driving the sequel forward.
In addition to having a great cast, MacGruber - and apparently its sequel – also have some great names behind the camera too. The duo that Will Forte referred to in his Reddit remarks are Jorma Taccone and John Solomon, respectively. Most of you will probably have heard of Taccone, as he is not only a member of The Lonely Island, but he has popped up in the likes of Hot Rod, Role Models, The Watch, and Grown Ups 2. He made his directorial debut with MacGruber, which made sense given that he created the titular character, and directed most of the SNL shorts alongside Solomon - who is Forte’s writing partner and worked as part of Saturday Night Live’s writing team between 2006 and 2014.
Despite the obvious talent involved, one can imagine that it would still take a huge leap of faith for any studio to order MacGruber 2 into production after the failings of the first movie. However that doesn’t mean that the likes of Netflix, Amazon or another online streaming company might decide to give it a look…
