How Zoe Saldana Feels About Squeezing Into Her Short Star Trek Beyond Outfit

The original Star Trek series was set in the future, but was filmed in the 1960’s. When Paramount decided to reboot the series, they had to take both concepts into account when creating costumes that paid homage to the original, while being new and different at the same time. This means that all the women of Starfleet are running around in dresses, just as they did back in the original series. Zoe Saldana has mixed feelings about this. She’s not shy about calling out the outfit for being really short, but at the same time, she feels good about the fact that she can actually fit into the thing after recently giving birth to twins.

Zoe Saldana did most of her shooting for Star Trek Beyond last summer. At the time, she spoke to Yahoo about how ridiculously short her uniform was in the film. However, as she had only given birth to her twins a few months previously, the fact that she was able to fit into the incredibly small costume was at least one thing to be happy about.

It’s still short. I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ But you know what. I just had twins and the fact that I’m able to wear this little dress seven months later, I’m grateful!

We don’t envy the workout that we’re sure Zoe Saldana went through to get back into miniskirt shape post-pregnancy.On the plus side however, Uhura gets to have sleeves now, so there’s that. One update that the Starfleet uniform has received in Star Trek Beyond is that it now has long sleeves, rather than the short, bordering on nonexistent ones that were part of the uniform in the previous movies. This actually makes the outfit look significantly more like the one Nichelle Nichols wore in the original series. However, the uniform is still ridiculously short. Check out this image that Zoe Saldana sent out on Instagram recently when she was working on reshoots.

It’s a bit extreme, to say the least. If the camera were positioned any differently, we’d have to put a NSFW tag on this story. While the new Star Trek movies have the barest of reasons to adhere to various aspects of series continuity, you’d think three movies in Starfleet could offer pants as a uniform option.

Zoe Saldana is currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which also has her squeezing into tight clothes, though they do at least cover most of her body. Star Trek Beyond will be out this summer.
